Booked this hotel at Last Minute and once again we were not disappointed with the choice.
Beautifully situated with stunning views across the port, the hotel is unusual in that it has been expanded across adjacent sites so the quiet village road divides the hotel accommodation and bars from the dinning rooms and pools.
Lovely and querky.
The food is excellent and so plentiful with a lovely friendly atmosphere, with a great choice, the main bar with its large outdoor seating is very good and the two pools occupy safe quiet garden sites.
A bonus is the waterfront Tapas bar down on the road level.
Would return in a heartbeat.
My partner and I spent a week half board at the Hotel Vistamar during the second week of October 2019. Over-looking the waterfront natural harbour is pretty and peaceful but too peaceful for us at the end of the season. The majority of the bars and restaurants of the small waterfront town (which is quite a long walk from the hotel) were closed up for the season already to the extent it was quite difficult to find anywhere to go to in the evening. Hotel Vistamar was due to close on the 23rd Oct and even though taking in new holiday-makers during our stay, most of the drinks in the bar, ice creams and snacks were completely out of stock (including all beer on tap, wine, many spirits and soft drinks) and not to be replenished. The hotel building and grounds were nice and well kept.
I wouldn't recommend this hotel for half board especially for vegans/ vegetarians. Breakfast was good and varied, but evening meal very boring, the same every evening and nothing apart from the salad bar as a vegetarian option. Cuts of various meats and fish are cooked to order. I asked the catering manager a number of times if they could make us a couple of vegetarian main meals for the next evening but none were prepared and we got steered to the salad bar again. With very few other options in town we lived on cheese, salad and bread for the week. Not good enough in this day and age. A number of reception staff were rude and unhelpful. More 3 stars than 4.
I think I need to give some honest responses to some so called complaints about this hotel, so here goes:
Deposit - yes you are asked to provide a security deposit of €200 on arrival. This can be done in cash that you’ll get returned on departure. Alternatively you can use your credit card. In this case no money is taken from the card, it’s is simply ‘blocked’ so it’ll appear as a pending transaction. This won’t cause you any issues unless you’re bumping up against your card limit.
Assuming you don’t damage anything or cause unnecessary nuisance there is no issue.
Pool - yes the pool is over the road. We’re not talking about a major motorway here, it’s a back road in a small sleepy town. In fact it’s 10 steps to cross the road, I’ve counted! Again, not really an issue.
Bar times - yes the pool bar closes at 6pm and the hotel bar doesn’t open until 7pm. If you can’t survive for an hour without a drink you probably need to see your doctor for help rather than complain to the hotel.
TV - yes there is only one English Channel (sky news). Did you really come on holiday to watch TV? Let’s check, a French company owning a hotel in Spain...unlikely to offer a plethora of English channels are they. Why not go for a walk, have dinner, sit by the pool, sit on the balcony, chat to your holiday partner, play a game? You can watch TV at home. Then think about how many Spanish channels are on your TV?!
One improvement I would suggest is adding a kettle to the rooms as there isn’t any right now. If you need a tea/coffee then you might want to think about taking a travel kettle as we did.
The staff were all great, really helpful and friendly. They all spoke very good English so communication was never an issue.
We stayed half board which was excellent value for money. Breakfast was extensive including cereals, pastries, ham/cheeses, breads. Hot food included eggs, bacon, sausages and even fresh made omelettes with the filling of your choice!
Portocolom is a quiet, sleepy harbour town. You won’t be getting a lively night out filled with bars and clubs here. It’s the sort of place you go to relax and get away from it all.
So in summary, if you want a banging nightlife then go somewhere else. The hotel is lovely but could do with a kettle in the rooms. Every other complaint is unjustified in my opinion. If you want a relaxing time to recharge batteries then I’d recommend this place.
