First class all inclusive in Antigua
Jan 2021 |

We were fortunate to stay at the Cocobay Resort in early January for 2 wonderful weeks. The location is one of the best we have ever seen. Stunning views from all angles, including the cottages, restaurant, bar, and swimming pools. All meals are a la Carte, with a linen napkins placed in your lap by the Maitre d' who takes you to your table. This is your first hint of what is to come. The menu of the day for breakfast, lunch and dinner is then presented to you. There are always three choices and never once were we disappointed. The food is excellent and presentation is incredible. In the cottages, the beds and pillows are so comfortable, you then open the double doors onto the balcony with a view across the bay. On a Sunday (from cottage 40) we could hear the choir singing in the church across the valley whilst simultaneously watching a turtle swimming across the bay.....amazing !

The staff can't do enough for you, from Janine on reception, through to Denise and Carl in the restaurant. Louis and Altino on the main bar will anticipate your alcohol requirement from the second day with grace and professionalism, and Vinicia on the pool bar is just such a pleasure, a real sweetheart. If you fancy a sail Roxanne will take you out, and if you just want to lay on the beach she will bring you your drinks and your lunch, always with a smile.

We hope to return to Cocobay again and can't recommend it highly enough.

Fabulous staff, but some basic issues that need to be fixed
Jan 2021 |
  • I've updated this review from three to four stars after O'Neal, the resort manager, reached out to me with with a very considerate message based on the feedback form we filled out upon checkout. I really feel that the staff are great and doing their best, but that the resort would benefit greatly from fixing the issues I outline here.*
  • We had a nice time at Cocobay, but a number of issues with the property did not justify the $1400/night we paid.

Good points: Very friendly staff, excellent location, great beach, nice pools, amazing massage, tasty cocktails, smooth airport pickup and drop-off, nice live music at night

Bad points: We paid extra for a room with an outdoor bathtub, only to find that we had no hot water in our room. The shower was completely cold and the tub would run warm only for about a minute before switching to cold. We talked to the staff about this on our second day but nothing was done, so we wound up not being able to use the tub. This was the biggest negative point for us because, again, we paid extra for this room because of the tub. Huge disappointment. The plunge pool was also completely unusable as it was freezing. So basically we just wasted a bunch of money for nothing.

The room was also less private than we expected. We were hoping for a truly romantic escape. Our balcony faced the ocean, away from the view of anyone on land, but there were guys on jetskis zipping back and forth literally all day. This was noisy and also intrusive. One of the jetski guys even called to us on our balcony from the ocean to try to convince us to to take a jetski trip. Highly unprofessional and simply unacceptable.

The food was also an issue. It's truly mediocre, and we wound up eating four of our meals in three days off property. Excellent decision, as all the restaurants we tried were delicious, but also a waste of money given that this is an all-inclusive resort. The champagne that comes with the all-inclusive price is also about half a step above Asti or another similarly overly sweet "wine product." We wound up going to the grocery store to stock up on something better.

Music was an issue. At one point, the bar and restaurant were playing two different soundtracks, creating a noisy clash at the pool. When I asked about this, the bar tender told me she couldn't do anything about it because there was no way to synchronize the music. We wound up moving to the other pool to escape the noise.

A few other things: At one point, the resort ran out of clean beach towels. The wifi in restaurant and bar area also stopped working within an hour of our arrival and never came back on throughout our three day stay. We were not offered a welcome drink upon checkin (we later saw that others were). And we also had to kill a huge cockroach in our room one night that was crawling around our coffee cups (I realize we're in a tropical location and insects will be around, but there's a large gap under the door of the room that's basically an open invitation to roaches).

All told, we had a nice time at Coocbay despite the various annoyances and disappointments. Again, the staff really made the experience much, much better and should be commended. The location is gorgeous. What's not ok, though, is charging so much for a product with this many basic issues. I hope management takes these points into consideration, because this place could be so much more with a little attention to detail, upkeep and care.

    Absolutely Amazing!
    Jan 2021 |

Where to start? We extended from a 6 to 8 night stay because we did not want to leave. We have stayed at many hotels and resorts around the Caribbean over the years, but this is now our favourite.

The property is beautiful, with stunning views. The rooms are separate cottages, so there is privacy and the decor is an attractive rustic chic, which we liked. the public spaces are all open, so plenty of fresh air, and a strict adherence to Covid protocols, so very safe.

The service at this resort is a credit to them. We found everyone to be really friendly and helpful, and this makes such a difference for a relaxing and enjoyable holiday. Amongst those we connected with were Kemline and Jeanine on front desk, Davern and Carl in the restaurant and Roxanne on the beach.

We thought the food was good, with plenty of choice for lunch and dinner. Breakfast more limited.

We brought bug spray and we thought it helped to a certain extent, but since we like sitting at the beach until late afternoon, inevitably you will get bitten.

We like to visit different locations and have very rarely said that we will return to one place, but we liked this resort and the people so much, we are already planning on returning.

    Thank you Cocobay!
