Dit resort bevindt zich op enkele kilometers van het stadscentrum en ongeveer 4 kilometer van de talrijke winkels en volop amusement. Een halte van het openbaar vervoer ligt op ongeveer 200 m en het dichtstbijzijnde zandstrand is ongeveer 4 kilometer verwijderd.Het golfhotel beschikt op 4 etages over 188 kamers. Het wordt omgeven door een 1500 vierkante meter grote tuin. Het hotel heeft een ontvangsthal met een receptie die 24 uur per dag geopend is, liften, een wisselkantoor, een hotelkluis, winkels, een kiosk en een kapsalon. Verder vindt u hier een café, een bar, internettoegang (tegen betaling), een WiFi hotspot en conferentiefaciliteiten. Voor de kleine gasten zijn er een miniclub (tegen betaling) en een speelplaats. Voor auto's is er parkeergelegenheid. De was- en roomservice, een medische dienst en een fietsverhuur (tegen betaling) completeren het aanbod.De goed ingerichte kamers beschikken over een badkamer met douche, bad en haardroger. Verder zijn ze voorzien van een minibar/koelkast, een kluis, een telefoon, internetaansluiting, een radio, satelliet-/kabeltelevisie en een individueel instelbare airconditioning.In het buitengedeelte van het hotel is er een zwembad, een zonneterras met ligstoelen en parasols en een zwembadbar. Pleasant but needs a modernising

Plus sides, food on site, breakfast, the snack bar and restaurant were fantastic, certainly ate well and reasonably priced. Big pool, plenty of space to relax indoors and out. Gym is adequately equipped, locker rooms and bedrooms perfectly adequate, but again very dated. Easy access from the hotel to the course, well stocked shop, buggies etc. You can tell it was probably majestic a few years ago, but everywhere is a little tired. That being said it’s reflected in its value. Downside. The course (only played the main one) as mentioned is parched on the fairways, appreciate the weather has been dry for some time (but other courses in the area look green) greens are in decent condition, tee boxes I’m sure could be better maintained, as with the bunkers, which just lack another 4 or 5 inches of sand! All in all just needs a bit of refreshing in every aspect, ticked a box for a golf break, but wouldn’t return as is.

Stayed at Penina Golf Resort and Hotel, in Alvor, Portugal. Rated as 5 Star. Unfortunately this was not the case. The Room we stayed in was tired and dated, needs updating. The Balcony off the room, was filthy, the paint was peeling off the walls and full of birds droppings. The single beds were like camp beds, so uncomfortable. We asked for the room to be cleaned twice, only the towels changed, very poor. As for the Golf courses, there are suppose to be 3 available, only the championship was. It might have been the championship course a few years ago but unfortunately not anymore. The grounds are lovely but the outdoor furniture is filthy. Needs a good power wash. Overall the resort needs a serious update to get 5 stars. I Would Rate as 2 1/2 to 3 Stars.

Tweaks still needed but you can see the green shoots.

As you will see from past reviews, I have been to Penina many times in the past, and hope to return on many other occasions. I love this place and please read some of my past reviews if you need some other thoughts as to why that is. Part of the reason why my wife and I was there this time was to play in the International Golf Week that the Hotel organises. Two individual Stableford rounds, Two team events, some other parts to the golf and some organised meals. This was all fantastic and George and his team that organise this have much to be proud of. Just excellent. My wife doesn't play but enjoys all the social side to the week, as well the Pool and other aspects to our time there. For instance (and for the first time for me) we drove out to Monchique in the Mountains and had lunch in the village and took in the view from the mountain top near there. An excellent adventure away from the golf. We also had a few days to ourselves after the organised week and just took in the loveliness that is this hotel and golf course. A very good and much needed break. The course was great if very dry. I didn't have time to look at some of the other courses in the area as to their appearance, but they clearly are still having issues with watering here. Portugal and Spain are VERY dry as has been reported, so hopefully there is a plan to counter that in some way. The greens though were superb. I couldn't blame them on my poor putting!!!!! It all still needs a bit of a tidy and the ditches at some stage need dredging to release the silt that has built up but surly that will come. There are still some areas that the hotel as well that need a general tidy up as it recovers from COVID times, and we are told that's coming. There is a sign outside saying as much and JJW need to make sure this happens. Totally understand its "step by step" and a long term project. What cant and MUST not be lost though is the feel of the place as things get refreshed. The staff here are just fabulous and its SO lovely to see many faces I have seen before. Some of the work is outstanding and all of you please know how appreciative our group were of their service. Our room on the pool side, the breakfast (food in general except the chocolate they give you at night time...just go back to a small Pastel de Nata would be my vote) and the general feel of the place are all still great. This is a place for "respectful" golf groups and couples in my opinion and if you want something a bit boisterous, then Villamoura Marina is the place for you. Its still not back to 5 star which is why I have only given it a 4 star review here, but that will not stop me returning next year again for a similar time. Just keep on getting back to the standard this place should be without spoiling all the good that is and has been here. See you next year.
