Very dated and not clean hotel

Let me start off by saying everybody at the hotel was very kind and very helpful. Unfortunately, the hotel is dated and needs renovations. When I first checked into my first room, I noticed right away that the room has seen better days (and it also had cigarette burns in the couch and headboard). To make matter MUCH worse…later that night, I had cockroach’s in my bathroom!!! It was close to 2am, but I insisted that I was moved right away (and they did move my room). The best room was smaller, but I didn’t have any roaches. I did have some ants. There were never a tremendous amount of ants…but everyday I would find ants crawling up the drapes, on my nightstand, on the desk. I went to the breakfast every morning. Unfortunately, it was a common thing for them to run out of clean plates or clean glasses. I would have to ask for clean plates and it would take a very long time before they would ever arrive. They would also frequently run out of food (I.e. eggs). Once they run out - they don’t replace them. I thought that was very odd - but it is what it is. Again, very nice people - however I would stay somewhere else next time. There is a Hyatt right across the street and also the Intercontinental. I didn’t stay in either one of those properties…but I would imagine them being much better.

More Like A Two Star Hotel

When we booked this hotel, it was billed as a 4**** hotel, but clearly is falls way short of that rating. It might be a 3*** hotel, but I think it is closer to a 2** hotel. The carpets in the halls are worn and ripped, the ceiling paint in the bathroom is peeling, the neighbour is seedy and it is kilometres from any points of interest. It is also located on a major thoroughfare that is noisy. It was not a pleasant stay at the Athenaeum Grand Hotel.

Fabulous Staff at this Hotel

We spent 5 days at the hotel with a group of 15 university students. Due to Covid, and flight delays, and restaurant problems, and lost passports... let's just say it was a challenge. But the fabulous front-desk staff handled everything! They just kept knocking-down all our issues and kept us on track and on time. Always with a smile. Always full of good ideas! Always so helpful. If you are noticing all the complications with travel these days, I can recommend this place as an oasis of sanity in the flurry of complications.
