Okay but Overpriced.
Hotel del Coronado has a prime seaside location, but it is a very busy hotel that lacks in amenities or personal service. Our "Views" room was clean, with a lovely ocean vantage, adequate storage, and comfortable beds, and we appreciated the contemporary, uncluttered decor. However, the value wasn't there at $1300+ a night. The bathroom was cramped, and we were provided few towels at a time and only basic toiletries. The room was also small, with little floor space around the two queen beds, and some items in our room were broken. Staff vacillated between obsequious and indifferent, and they could not always provide the service they promised, such as delivering luggage to our room promptly. There seem to be management issues here, as the line to check in or ask questions of the concierge was exceedingly long at all times. We were charged a bunch of resort fees for things like yoga classes that we were given no information about, and $75 a day (not including tips) for valet. So there are a lot of inflated or "junk" fees on top of the already high room rates. I would not stay here again because I don't see the value, and there are places that give a more relaxing experience for the money.
Beach Sewage Contamination Issue - Not Exactly Included in the Advertising
There are some great aspects to this resort, and my family made some good memories in spite of the situation described below. That is why I am giving it a 2 out of 5. Very specifically though, this review is to inform other potential travelers about the beach sewage contamination issue before they spend this kind of money. We did not know about this issue until we first arrived at the beach...and I mean the advertised Hotel Del Coronado beachfront which is a primary focus for what I believe would be the majority of travelers. Right when you get to the sand, you see the small yellow signs with red circles around and red lines through freestyle swimming stick figures warning beach visitors that the there is a sewage contamination at that beach and that you should not get in the water. That same contaminated water is the water that is hitting you and your kids in the face with the ocean spray, that people are playing with in the sand, that's falling on you as rain, etc. About halfway into our weeklong trip, we started reading some of the San Diego-area publications regarding the beach sewage contamination. Those publications go into detail about all of the illnesses and diseases associated with exposure to the contaminated ocean water, spray and rain. As we read article after article, we started to feel embarrassed that we had even taken our kids into the situation so blindly. We felt embarrassed that we spent so much money without even looking into it. At that point, we didn't really want to be anywhere near the beach or the spray, which is a problem on a trip to a beachfront resort. I strongly encourage anyone considering this resort to read up on this sewage issue before you book a trip here. Ocean front is extra, if you can believe that... ;)
Overpriced
The lobby, halls, and common areas are meticulously remodeled, and you can feel a magical quality throughout the property. Our guest room was dark, drab, and worn however. All magic gone once we opened the door. Room was functional, but not as nice as the Best Western we stayed the night before. The Hilton Honors $15 per person breakfast credit didn't make a dent in the $46 weekday buffet, but this is a fancy place, after all. Perhaps with a more cheerful room I would have enjoyed the place a bit more.
