History and culture

Ovacik is a quiet Turkish village in the Fethiye district. It sits on a small plateau near the bottom of Mount Babadağ, which is highly popular among paragliders. The resort has only recently seen development to keep up with tourism growth, so you can find plenty of untouched areas if you want to discover history and culture.

Today, Ovacik is a popular destination thanks to its traditional charm and beautiful landscape. The village lies in a beautiful valley at the Babadag mountain base, surrounded by protected national forest. Although it’s shadowed by a mountain, Ovacik itself is relatively flat, making it ideal for leisurely walks, immersing yourself in the local culture. Wildlife is a big part of the community here, and it’s common to see goats and chickens roaming freely around the streets.

Getting around Ovacik

By dolmus: Dolmuses are the local minibuses, which operate throughout Turkey’s resorts, providing a cheap, reliable shuttle service to the beach and nearby attractions. The dolmuses are a good option for visiting nearby resorts, like Ölüdeniz.

By car: If you’re interested in exploring the region, a hire car is your best bet. There are several car hire companies at Dalaman Airport.

By taxi: The taxis in the region are yellow and fitted with a meter, although they charge higher rates at night. Taxis can be flagged down or booked in advance from your hotel.

Events in Ovacik

Air games: Nearby Ölüdeniz is one of Europe’s top paragliding destinations, with thrill seekers from all over the world coming to fly over the Babadag Mountains. In October, the skies are alive with base-jumpers, paragliders, microlights, skydivers and daredevils whizzing about in wingsuits. Be careful if you’re sunbathing on Ölüdeniz’ beach, as this is earmarked as the landing-pad for competitors!

World music festival: Fethiye’s World Music Festival is held every May and takes place in various venues around the town, over three days. You’ll see performances from musicians from almost every corner of the globe, and the concerts are open to the public and are free of charge.
