While in Fuerteventura, make sure you pay a visit to the trendy surfing village of Lajares. Just a short ten minute drive away from Corralejo, the town is a vibrant place to spend a morning before travelling on to the nearby beaches.
To get to Lajares you can hike from Corralejo along the volcanoes, but be prepared for a long and challenging walk. Most people choose to get there by bus, which runs regularly from nearby towns, or by hire car. As you come into the town, look out for the two windmills, known as ‘Molina’ and ‘Molino’.
As you wander through the town, take some time to browse the small shops. Be sure to visit Artesania Lajares where you can watch the craftspeople at work as they make lace and embroidery. If you’re in the town on a Saturday, you can’t miss the artisan market where you can buy unique, locally-made gifts and souvenirs.
After walking around the town, take a short hike up the volcano summit before returning for a quiet coffee in one of the small, quirky cafés. If you’re in Lajares at night time, you’ll see the village come to life as you eat out with both tourists and locals at family-run restaurants and enjoy a cold beer in the bar.
Lajares is close to Fuerteventura’s best surfing spots, so have a look in the water sports shops before hitting the beach for an action-packed afternoon. If you’re a beginner there are plenty of surfing, diving and kiteboarding schools offering day trips and full courses. After getting your adrenaline fix, return to Lajares along with the local surfers for a well-earned drink.
