Chamonix may be the most famous ski resort in France, but a picturesque backdrop alongside a huge list of activities help it stand out as a wonderful, year-round holiday destination. Chamonix has retained much of its Alpine village character from back when it hosted the first ever Winter Olympics in 1924. Skiers return year after year for the steep runs, off-piste tracks and vibrant après-ski.
Whether you’re a keen snow sports enthusiast or prefer more leisurely pursuits, there’s no shortage of things to do in Chamonix. If you’re fairly fit, cross-country skiing or ‘ski de fond’ is an exciting experience and a splendid way to discover the area. The two main courses take you through thick pine forests. Test your Torvill and Dean skills on the resort’s outdoor ice skating rink or practise your serves in a game of tennis at the sports centre. There is also a ten-pin bowling alley and a casino
Chamonix boasts some of the most challenging terrain over five varied ski areas, so it’s no surprise skiing tops the list of things to do in Chamonix. Only two of the ski areas are connected so make the most of the ski buses. Les Plannards is the closest ski area and has four gentle slopes, including a wide nursery slope. La Flegere has a good choice of long red and blue runs. If you’ve got the legs for it, Valley Blanche offers a 12-mile off-piste run, and rewards skiers with far-reaching views of the Alps. Kids have a ski park all to themselves.
Take to the air and see the breathtaking peaks, slopes and valleys of Chamonix from a bird’s-eye-view, on a helicopter tour. Impress your friends back home by telling them you tried ice climbing; there’s hundreds of frozen routes to choose from. Ski joering is amongst the more unique activities in Chamonix yet all ages can do it. Letting a horse pull you along on skis is so much fun. It would be easy to spend a day at the swimming centre, whether you go swimming in one of three heated pools or allow yourself some relaxation time in a Turkish bath.
