At the foot of the Kitzsteinhorn glacier in Hohe Tauern National Park, you’ll find Kaprun, surrounded by towering ice-white mountains. A perfect hotspot for skiing and snowboarding at all levels; it‘s no surprise that the Austrian region is such a top choice for families. Kaprun has a lively après-ski scene, complete with a great choice of cosy pubs, mountain-view restaurants and natural attractions.
Covered in snow for 10 months of the year, the Kitzsteinhorn glacier of Zell Am See-Kaprun is great for skiers and boarders. Take in the ice-white scenery of the mountainous town with a guided tour or a sleigh ride, or follow one of the Nordic walking trails. Experience the warm seasonal markets at Easter and Christmas, and spend a day browsing the high street stores in the centre of Zell Am See – just a 15-minute bus ride away. Then unwind in the steam baths of the spas before partying into the hours of the early morning in one of the ski huts.
With 10 months of snow a year, it’s no surprise that skiing and snowboarding are two of the most popular activities in Kaprun. Take on the powdery-white nursery slopes in the village centre on the Lechnerberg. Speed down seven of the adrenaline-pumping black runs to test your skills on the wide-open, icy paths and daring dips of the Kitzsteinhorn and Schmittenhöhe mountains. If you’re a beginner, try the gentle slopes of the family-friendly Maiskogel and Schmittenhole. Before you know it, you’ll be running the more extreme slopes with expert instruction from the Kaprun ski school.
One of the best places to go in Kaprun is the sports centre, with plenty of off-piste fun to be had. Take a dip in the indoor pool and play a couple of games on the tennis courts. Bring the family along on a dog sled ride or a snowmobile drive into the valleys. After a long day on the slopes, make your way at the Tauern Spa. Take your pick from a long list of massage and beauty treatments, and swim in the outdoor pool while enjoying the open sky views. The saunas are a great place to chill out while the kids enjoy the play area.
One of the best ways to explore the powder-white mountains that surround Kaprun is by guided hike or snowshoe tour. Breathe in the crisp fresh air as you’re taken through snowy woodlands, mountain peaks and past Europe’s highest waterfall, Krimml. The medieval Kaprun Castle is one of the oldest castles in the region, and it holds regular fairs, concerts and tours for the whole family. For something really thrilling, head up to Gipfelwelt 3000, a 300m-high platform at the top of the Kitzsteinhorn glacier. You’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the Kaprun mountains.
