The charming village of Hinterglemm rests in the picturesque Glemm Valley, close to the livelier resort of Saalbach, just a 90-minute drive from Salzburg. The slopes known as the ‘Ski Circus’ and majestic mountain scenery attract skiers of all abilities. Off the slopes, its cosy mountain huts invite you in to fill up on traditional delicacies and warm up with a glass of gluhwein.
It’s no surprise Hinterglemm is a favourite for first-time skiers, with gentle slopes and a superb ski school. The fast and efficient ski lift network takes you from your doorstep in the village centre up to the runs in no time. There are 200km of runs including snowy woodland, wide-open descents and slaloms to explore. Non-skiers needn’t worry, as there are plenty of other activities to enjoy, from scenic walks to tobogganing and curling. Aside from winter sports there are plenty of bars to relax in and restaurants catering to all tastes.
Hinterglemm is a wonderful all-round destination for winter sports, with skiing and snowboarding topping the list. There are 68 runs in total to conquer, five of which are black runs. Some of the best activities in Hinterglemm are off the slopes; enjoy a romantic horse-drawn sleigh ride amongst the wintry sights of the Glemm Valley or feel the rush of wind on your face as you whizz through woodland on a snowmobile. Make the most of the breathtaking scenery and take a walk on the Tree Top Path and Golden Gate Bridge of the Alps -the suspended walkway over the snow-laden forest.
Kick off your ski boots and head out to experience the après-ski scene. There are a good number of places to go in Hinterglemm, though neighbouring Saalbach is generally even livelier with trendy nightclubs open until the early hours. When the clock hits 5pm everyone heads to Hinterhagalm Tea Bar. Its live music and friendly welcome are sure to get you in the party mood. Locals and visitors flock to the Goastall pub to appreciate the fun atmosphere. In the Harley Davidson Biker Pub you can sit amongst shiny Harleys and motorcycle memorabilia while enjoying the laid-back vibe.
Families have plenty of choice when it comes to dining, with everything from pizzerias to traditional Austrian fare and gourmet plates. A generous pork fillet covered in mushroom gravy with a mountain of spatzle (doughy noodles) followed by a schnapps is just what you need for refuelling after a long day on the slopes. Be sure to try the ‘hot goat’ specialty in the Goatstall - it’s a prime steak fillet served on a wooden platter in the shape of a goat. The Hinterhagalm lodge bar is one of the best attractions in Hinterglemm. It was used as a backdrop in ‘The Sound of Music’.
