Famed for its Wild West image, the city of Calgary has an exciting energy with plenty to keep you entertained during your Canadian adventure. There’s a vibrant arts scene, with many festivals taking place throughout the year. As well as performing arts, visit in July and you can experience the famous Calgary Stampede, which is a ten-day-long festival, featuring music, food, street parades, fireworks, rodeo riders, bucking broncos and championship chuck wagon racing. Or head to Drumheller for the day and take in the views of the Badlands from inside the mouth of the world’s largest dinosaur.

Alberta’s capital city, Edmonton offers the perfect blend of vibrant city life and peaceful nature. It certainly doesn’t do things by halves either; it’s home to West Edmonton Mall, featuring the world’s largest wave pool and also The River Valley Park, which is the largest urban park in North America. Venture outside the city and visit Elk Island National Park, where you can see free-roaming deer, bison and even moose while you enjoy a picnic in beautiful surroundings. It’s an absolute must for both nature lovers and animal enthusiasts alike.

Perfect for any outdoor enthusiast, the bustling resort of Banff has it all. Think shops, restaurants and a vibrant nightlife set to the picture-perfect backdrop of snowy mountains, glassy lakes and lush, Canadian wilderness. High up in the Rockies, it’s a popular resort with plenty going on. There’s a huge range of activities to try your hand at, from hiking to skiing and even a thermal spa. But no holiday to Banff would be complete without visiting the stunning Lake Louise, which is just a short drive away. With its idyllic scenery and glistening, tranquil waters, it really is a thing of beauty.

Jasper National Park is the largest national park in the Canadian Rockies and among it lays the town of Jasper; the world’s largest accessible dark sky preserve. A holiday here will see you falling in love with both the resort’s laid-back atmosphere and the locals, who will welcome you with open arms. No matter what time of year you visit Jasper, you’ll never be short of something to do. In the summer, there are some amazing walking trails for you to follow, where you can see just how much wildlife you can spot. Then in winter, fuel your inner-adrenaline junkie with skiing, snowboarding and all things in between.

There’s plenty of wildlife in Alberta. Five national parks and 250+ provincial parks and natural areas are home to nearly 600 species. With moose, bison, elk, grizzly and black bears – and you may even spot more elusive types such as wolf, cougar or bobcat.  There’s also plenty for bird watchers, especially round spring and autumn due to the migratory flight paths.

Alberta is full of activities you can’t find anywhere else. There’s activities to suit all tastes and seasons, whether it’s exploring the foothills and prairies on horseback or canoeing on Alberta’s many lakes and rivers. When things get chilly, you can experience dogsledding across a frozen lake or take advantage of the many snowboarding and skiing opportunities.

All over Alberta you’ll be sure to spot tributes to Canada’s First Nations, Métis and Inuit. Visit Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park, where you will find North America’s largest concentration of petroglyphs (carvings) and pictographs (paintings) on the cliffs. Explore the interactive exhibits at Blackfoot Crossing Historical Park and investigate early Metis life at Metis crossing – you can even sleep in a tepee.

The Fossil Trail, spanning 2,500km from northwest Alberta to southeast Alberta, is home to the richest source of dinosaur fossils in the world. Be sure to visit the famous Royal Tyrell Museum near Drumheller and see one of the world’s largest displays of full dinosaur skeletons. At Dinosaur Provincial Park (a UNESCO World Heritage site) you can go on a guided archaeological dig, where many of the planet’s most important discoveries have been made.
