Dream come true
My husband and I came to St Lucia for the first time and stayed at Calabash Cove. This place stole our hearts! The staff was incredible and treated us like family. We took several excursions outside of the resort and the staff made all arrangement for us, we felt well taken care of! We loved the food, especially the breakfast. I already miss the fresh fruit, chocolate croissants, French press coffee and waffles. The property is stunning, the lush gardens, immaculate infinity pool, and private beach with water toys! Because its so initiate you never had to fight for a chair or wait in line to use a kayak. We stayed in the Jr. Suite which has a jacuzzi tub in the room! The only complaint we have was there was not enough hot water available to fill the tub above the jets so we didn’t get to enjoy it, which was a big bummer. Maybe we tried using at a busy time when the hot water tank was being shared by other rooms. But this wouldn’t stop us from coming back to visit again. We love you, Calabash Cove!
Lovely staff, pool and beach
Pros: 1. The resort is very well staffed and everyone is helpful and friendly. There are only 26 rooms, so it does not feel in the least impersonal. 2. We had a swim-up junior suite - lovely to be able to get straight into the pool and use the swim-up bar. There are lots of beds and loungers with shades around the pool. 3. There is a beautifully maintained beach with lots of loungers, including ones on the grassy slope down to the beach. 4. The helicopter transfer to and from the resort is efficient and avoids the apparently rather tedious car journey. 5. Food portions are very generous and there is a good selection of daily specials on the menu. 6. It is within a short drive of Rodney Bay, Castries and Pigeon Island (by moderately expensive taxis: about $30 US for a 10-15 minute drive ). We enjoyed meals at Jacques Waterfront, Pink Plantation House and Coal Pot and had a very enjoyable half-day on Pigeon Island. Cons: 1. As is acknowledged here, the resort needs refurbishment. Many fixtures and fittings are tired and out-of-date. 2. The food is good but was never outstanding. 3. I don't like tiny wrapped portions of butter and jams and huge dispenser containers of soap and shampoo (it feels like penny-pinching). 4. We were not warned that one needs a doctor's letter confirming that one is fit to drive if one is over 55 years old, so were not able to use the car we had booked. 5. Staff were rather over-eager to remove plates as soon as they detected that one might have finished a meal. 6. The pool can be dominated by raucous guests. Some foul-mouthed ones arrived just before we left - they did moderate their behaviour when the staff responded to complaints from others.
Beautiful Setting Be Prepared for stairs
Beautiful setting. Lovely people on staff. Everyone was courteous and professional, eager to help make our visit pleasant. Cant say enough about how friendly everyone is. Room service good, prompt staff response. Housekeeping was properly done, restocked supplies as expected at this level resort except noted that handsoap was watered down on our second day. Not ok for the money you spend. Since it was a business trip, I didnt avail myself of any beach or pool time or spa treats. Pool deck and area is quite well designed and has swim up bar. Room was comfortable. No phone at desk but one on nightstand. No clocks in room probably intentional; doesn't bother me but hubby likes to have one at night. Our room was a junior suite. Drawbacks: lack of night light if you need to use toilet at night. The bath area is up 3 steps from the main bed room section, I found this to be inconvenient. The shower door opening is smallus though shower itself is roomy and good. Nice jacuzzi though not level so quality of construction is imperfect. Many stairs to get from reception and dining to rooms. If you stay in beach front cottages, there are tons of stairs. No problem going down or if you are in good shape. Could use some golf carts or similar to help get around. This is not handicapped accessible. Rough patches of road as you approach Calabash and just after entry gate. That should be fixed. Many roads in the country are in bad shape. Traffic in the area is busy mostly during morning and evening rush hour. For such a busy area...roads and signage really need attention. Still drivers know their way around and taxi services are plentiful and come with friendly people and bottled water and in some cases the local beer. Food at Calabash is very good quality, quite delicious, and nicely presented. Gourmet level with local inspiration and ingredients. Wait staff also excellent. Calabash Cove was well situated for what I needed. Easy enough to get to amenities and appontments. Activities...depending on what and where you want abound. Main international airport is at least 90 minutes by car. Ask to go to concrete ovens roadside stand for bread, handheld savory fish or dal pies, grilled chicken, pork, and other very yummy fair. Our view and the overall setting are very beautiful. Small beach is not too far a walk, but again....stairs. Won't return because of stairs. Poured rain and only way to get to lobby/ reception is outside with an umbrella. So...there is that. Generally ok. Id say 3.5 out if 5 star.
