At last we were back!

Jun 2022 | Carol S

4 years since last here ( due to covid). Nice to to be back in the comfort and familiar surroundings of the Savoy. Quite a bit of refurbishment had been carried out during lockdown. We had hoped that the little fridge in our studio apartment would have been swopped for a bigger one (rather than a bigger TV). Also we were a bit annoyed at lack of control of 'sunbed claiming', also children running around the pool area and children commandeering the jacuzzi. All it needs is staff to remind them of the rules!

Amazing stay at the Royal Savoy

Jun 2022 | KayS902

We recently stayed at the Royal Savoy Hotel in Funchal, This was without doubt the nicest hotel we have ever stayed in. We were upgraded to a Superior Suite which was fabulous. The hotel is perfectly situated by the sea and a short walk into Funchal. The facilities are excellent, our suite with a sea view was very large and very comfortable. The hotel swimming pools and access to the sea are lovely. Every meal that we had was excellent and well priced. However the best part of this hotel are the staff. They are exceptional, extremely helpful, providing excellent service and very warm and friendly. We celebrated a birthday and a wedding anniversary during our stay and we were made to feel very special. We really had a lovely stay and I can't recommend this hotel enough. We can't wait to come back - a week wasn't long enough!

Needs Upgraded to 21st Century

Although I have a few reviews, I am not one to review every hotel or restaurant I ever vist. The Royal Savoy is around 20 years old and in an excellent location. It is just a 10 minute walk from the centre of Funchal, though you can stay around the hotel to eat in some wonderful fine dine places as well as a couple of great pubs and a food court. The public areas are in good order and clean. The lobby bar looked good, though we never actually sat there for a period of time. (Being called Thatchers was the one main reason). Check-In was quick and easy and our room 1401 was at the far end of the corridor, away from the noise of the lifts as requested. The room itself was clean, although obviously 20 years old, had been maintained to a reasonably high standard. Starting with the main room … The room is classed as a Junior Suite and consists of a Bedroom area and a Kitchenette/Living Area. The bed is a Zip-Link double which is comfortable and even larger than a SuperKing. Opposite is a dressing table which is well lit. The living area has a two seater settee a couple of chairs a table and a coffee table. Way too crowded for the area. Between the living area and the bedroom is a cabinets containing a fridge. There is a TV on top with a number of channels. The bathroom is so outdated, it really brings the 20 year hotel into focus. The plumbing is old and the mixer taps are reaching the end of life. The bathroom, consists of a single sink, bath separate shower toilet and bidet. It is certainly not a modern place. Breakfast and the staff there are excellent. A nice buffet of very good quality food, though waiting for your egg to be prepared can take some time. Very attentive staff who clear courses quickly. We took along a firestick to allow us to watch Netflix etc. but the Wi-Fi is awful. I mentioned it one day at reception, but was brushed off. The balcony attached to this room is probably one of the best in the hotel as it allowed us to sit in the sun most of the day in privacy. The pool area is huge and I am sure that even at full capacity a sun lounger would be easily found in a spot to suit. Each week, most guests are invited to gather for a drink courtesy of the hotel, however it is where we discovered that not being Vacation Club members (Timeshare) we were just being tolerated by other residents. Maybe we were just unlucky in the ones we chatted to, but there seemed to be two very distinct sets of guests. We did find out that the hotel is being lined up for a full renovation , however that is not booked in for another 10 years. Personally we would prefer to find an alternative hotel in the same location for our next visit. It was a 5* in the past, but that has passed if you base it on modern building standards. The facilities and the staff are all there, but they really need to sort out the Wi-Fi and bring in the 21st century requirements of guests.
