A very healthy enviroment with food, drinks and service of high quality for an All Inclusive hotel. The staff is extremelly kind and available for anything you may need. The night shows, in particular the dancing act, are amazing.

I don’t normally write reviews but this hotel was so far from what we were expecting I feel people should be warned! We arrived at 2.30pm on Saturday 18th June we had booked 2 deluxe sea view rooms for my husband and I and our 2 adult daughters. We were given 1018 and 1017 no one offered to take our bags up or show us to our rooms and I’m not surprised as The rooms were appalling 1018 was tiny dirty and smelt there were 6 hangers and 3 small drawers for 2 people, there was nowhere to put your suitcases and get around the bed, 1017 was a tiny bit bigger and had 6 drawers. Went back to reception and said these can’t be deluxe rooms they said they were and they couldn’t do anything but might be able to move us to a different deluxe room next day there were other rooms available but we would have to pay a lot more. As we hadn’t eaten and the buffet restaurant had closed we went to the bar to have a snack…it was appalling 3 tiny bowls of cucumber lettuce and tomato a pile of cakes, fritters (not sure what they were) and a pile of cold congealed chips! I was so upset I sat and rang British Airways to ask to be moved as we had clearly been mis-sold it took ages to get through and although she was lovely she said it wasn’t her department but she would pass it on and they would get back to me. We didn’t unpack. Next morning we went to reception and said can we be moved they said they had 2 rooms that would need to be cleaned but we could take a look…they were about 3 times as big as the others! We said we would have them as BA had not come back to us. They were empty at 10am and they said they would be ready at 3pm not sure why they couldn’t have been done quicker, went at 3 pm they said it would now be 4pm no apology nothing ! In the end the rooms (that we clearly should have been given to start with) were absolutely fine, bit tired and tatty but fine, the staff in the restaurant were lovely, the food is adequate but never hot and every day pretty much the same. Yes it does get very busy but you learn to go at quieter times. The gardens are beautiful, you could always get a sun bed at any time but they are quite basic. On our third day they did indeed have a proper snack station outside for when the restaurant was closed but why wasn’t it open when we arrived. The bar staff are very unfriendly and the reception staff we spoke to are verging on the rude. We loved Madeira everyone outside the hotel was so friendly, cable car, botanic gardens, baskets, hop on hop off bus, all excellent and Madeira is stunning so clean and beautiful just don’t stay in the Pestana Royal or if you do book 704 .

Looks like Pestana Royal's current star employee, Letícia Palmier could run the Royal, a failed Timeshare, better than her MASTER the Mr Pestana? Pestana doesn't repair faults in their Laughable but not so funny , supposedly 5 STAR establishments Guests have to "enjoy" self service at this 5 star Pestana venue, enjoying VERY DEAD/cold food at buffets, cheap booze, NO table service and WHAT IS cheap but not cheerful
