Beautiful setting in amazing gardens

This Relais & Chateaux Hotel & Golf is located on a hilltop with impressive views over Funchal. This beautiful property was first established in 1801 by the Count of Carvalhal, now owned by the Blandy family since the XIX century (120 hectares). Amazing well kept gardens and golf course, charming staff and excellent food.

A Lunch Which Was an Insult

We went to visit the gardens at Palheiro, part of which are on the property of the Relais & Chateau hotel, Casa Velha do Palheiro. Being very familiar with the quality of Relais & Chateau, my wife and I were excited at the prospect of having lunch in the beautiful hotel and its very warm, elegant and lovely dinning room. The fact that we were the only people having lunch surprised us, but did not deter us. IT SHOULD HAVE!!!!!!! Maybe its covid; maybe Relais & Chateau's standards have lapsed; maybe its just the old, tired, style of "fine dinning" in English style hotels, but the food was dreadful. My wife had a tasteless carrot soup to start with. She then had a salad that was uneatable, with dried-up old, wilted greens and lacking the ingredients as described in the menu. I first ordered the veal but the waiter came back and said it was not available so I ordered the beef. The meat was tough and tasteless. The sauce was simply oil with no taste. I am certain that the mushrooms and all of the other vegetables on the plate, came out of a can. Out of politeness we paid the bill (over 70 Euros) and left. It may be a wonderful place to stay, but do not eat there.

Wonderful place with a charming atmosphere, surrounded by a large green area. The service is excellent, as well as the restaurant. Very appreciated also the kindness and welcoming by the Manager and the attentions of the staff.
