Great Hotel in Lisbon
Just returned from a 3 night stay at HF Fenix. This hotel is situated in a great location, right opposite the starting point for the sightseeing buses the metro was less than 50m. We had a room on the 8th Floor with a balcony. Room was spacious, comfortable with a great shower. We were room only but did order breakfast to the room one morning for a birthday. A great breakfast was delivered and we were told as one of us was celebrating a birthday it would be complimentary along with a bottle of champagne. Thank you so much this was very kind. Every member of staff was exceptionally helpful and friendly throughout. We will be recommending this hotel to friends and aim to return in the summer.
Worst Customer Service and Sound Proofing Ever
Arrival at the hotel was fine. Our room on the 2nd floor at the back was fine. It's a corporate kind of 4 star hotel, but for a 3 night stay to visit Lisbon it's fine - all you need is somewhere clean and comfortable. Before going out the 1st evening we realised that the towels in the shower were sopping wet even though they were clean and folded - probably as left by the staff. We couldn't see any evidence of a leak or water running down the walls, but I could hear a noise like a dripping tap although none of the taps in our bathroom were leaking. We told the reception on our way out and suggested that they check why. Having got up very early (3.30am) to fly to Lisbon we were in bed by about 10.30pm when a loud noise started coming from the bathroom. The person in the room above ours was having a bath/shower and water started spraying through the ceiling. We called reception who immediately sent a technician - result we had to change rooms. One would think that the problem not being our fault that the hotel staff would do their best for their clients... However this was when the real problems began. We were moved to room 107 on the first floor just by the front door. There is an overhang at this level which, it would appear, traps all the sound which reverberates into the rooms on the first floor. So despite having double glazing you have the impression that there are no windows at all. We started dozing off at about 11.30pm to be awoken by the sound of the street cleaner truck going by which sounded like it was in our room. We asked reception if there was another room, but were told that the hotel was full, but there would be rooms free the next day. At 12 am there was a group of people chatting by the front door. If I spoke Portuguese I could have joined in the conversation ! At 1 am I thought there was a skate boarder in our room, but it was someone swapping out the laundry running the trolleys up and down metal sliders in and out of a van and through the marble hall underneath our room. At 2 am the toilet in the room above seemed to take 5 minutes to fill up, followed by what seemed like the sound of someone dragging a dead body across the floor. At 6 am we were woken by the sound of more deliveries under our window. By 8.30am, feeling like we had been on a red-eye flight with the blood shot and itchy eyes for proof, we had had breakfast and were back at reception to ask to change rooms. We made it clear we wanted a room at the back and not near a lift. The young woman at the reception was completely disinterested, but did offer us a room on the 7th floor. She said it was at the front but because it was so high would probably be ok. We went to see it. As the door of the lift opened we were literally opposite the room being offered. We declined, but for some reason I asked if the room had been available the night before. The way the woman hesitated to answer and taking into account it was only 8.30 am I can only presume it had been available and would certainly have been a better option for us than room 107. We were then told that a room would be available from 3pm and we could leave our luggage in the luggage room. Upon our return we were given the key to a room at the back and were told that our luggage had been taken there. When we got to the room the luggage there wasn't ours !! Fortunately our luggage was still in the luggage room. The room was fine except one of the 2 lightbulbs in the bathroom wasn't working and there was no soap in the dispenser. However we didn't have the force to complain until the next day. The next day by the time we got back at 4.30 pm someone obviously came to remedy the problems, but the beds hadn't been made! Not once did anybody ever apologise or make any effort to compensate for the inconvenience caused to us. Do the management not realise that a simple apology goes a very long way? It might be classed as a 4 star hotel, but definitely not the service. However a little shout out to the porter who moved us the first night and the personnel in the breakfast room who were all very friendly and helpful. We travelled with a group from IBM so we didn't choose the hotel. The travel agency undoubtedly got a group deal and that is probably why the hotel didn't want to give us an upgraded room, but in the circumstances it would have been the diplomatic thing to do. The next time we go back to Lisbon we will definitely not go back to this hotel even though it has a great location by the metro.
