The modern resort of Albufeira is a popular destination for families, groups and couples. Its bustling atmosphere means there’s always something fun to do. The resort hugs the striking coast of the Algarve and is shaped by breathtakingly beautiful cliffs. The huge amount of beaches means that boating, water sports and paddling is a high priority for holidaymakers. However this is not just a seaside resort, as Albufeira has a traditional Old Town and historic ruins that bring a cultural charm to this beach destination.

Excellent beaches

There are a huge number of beautiful beaches around Albufeira that are all unique so you can easily tailor your beach outing. A popular beach can be found in the Old Town called Praia dos Pescadores or better known as Fisherman’s Beach. Its soft sand and shallow waters are ideal for families with young children and there’s a good amount of restaurants and cafés nearby. Head down to the Blue Flag beach of Praia d’Oura for an upbeat atmosphere and somewhere to enjoy a wide range of water sports. For a romantic afternoon, take a stroll further east to Praia da Falesia, where magnificent red cliffs made of striking ochre stone shelter the small and remote sandy cove.

History and culture

Originally Albufeira was known as Baltum and was later renamed Al-Buhera by the Moorish settlers in the 8th century. The resort has historical gems hidden among the whitewash of houses and you can find the sand coloured ruins of Paderne Castle and the archaeological site of Cerro Da Vila in the surrounding areas. For a delightful look at traditional Albufeira, head to the Old Town to walk along the narrow cobbled streets and see the unique architecture.

Vibrant nightlife

It’s not just the stunning beach that makes Albufeira so popular; the nightlife is pretty spectacular too. The resort caters for all tastes, providing a variety of entertainment, so you’ll never have a dull evening. The main strip is the place to be after dark and it’s where you’ll find over a mile of fabulous neon lit bars and restaurants. Sip relaxing post-beach cocktails in a chilled-out setting or sit down to a steak dinner and a show. For something more upbeat, dance from bar to bar until you end up at one of the famous nightclubs like Kiss Disco. Join in with the regular themed nights and party the night away until the sun comes up.
