GREAT HOTEL...FAMILY FUN
Hotel Overview- This is a luxury Platinum hotel which did not diaappoint. Travelled as a family of 8. Clean and very helpful staff. Samia from reception was very friendly, welcoming and informative about local custom. We would especially like to thank Aziz who was our waiter and made our time there special and arranging a lovely surprise for my nieces birthday. ROOM- We were split into 3 different rooms (4015, 4215 & 4216). 4015 is located on the ground floor with a terrace and the other two on the 2nd floor. Beware there are no lifts so if ypu have mobility issues please consider contavting hotel before arrival for room request. The hotel staff bring the luggage round for u on a buggy cart. Rooms were spacious and with balcony however wasnt utilised due to birds dying over as no cover. Comes with a fridge and safety deposit box (no charge). Bottles of water put in room daily. HOTEL LOCATION- the back gate leads directly onto the promenade for beach with a small section reserved for hotel guests. 45 minute drive from airport. 10-15min from the Souk, 10-15min from Parkids(soft play for kids). There is some shops and McDonalds located nearby at Agadir Bay also 10-15min drive. Cabs stationed outside of hotel- only get in licensed orange or yellow ones and be sure to confirm price before travel. FACILITIES- The hotel grounds were huge and Im afraid that I was not able to go round the whole place. There are about 5 different bars- lounge, pool, karaoke, founty show and snack bar. There are 2 very large pools and a separate kids pool located near the kids club. There is a Spa located by show bar which offers various packages including ones for children at reasonable prices. There is a basketball court and playground and indoor heated pool. They have an area set up for fitness and games room for older children(unfortunately this was closed). As I was leaving, I did also notice there was a small building called Riu Art. Some days there are some vendors who have a small stand to sell spices and personalised bracelets. Mustapha is a great photographer who took great photos although they were somewhat costly. ENTERTAINMENT- The animation team are fun! Anwar was our favourite. They work hard and try to get as many people involved but don't pester you. We enjoyed learning the signature dance. Various activities going on throughout the day including darts, water aerobics, zumba, water polo and volleyball. They also provide evening entertainment every night at 9pm at the Founty Bar. The kids club runs from 10am to 12.30 and then again 3pm-5.30pm where they take the children for afternoon snack. The 3 children only went twice as they struggled to do stuff as the animation team were mainly speaking French and did not understand. They did however take part in the Moroccan fashion parade walk around the pool one afternoon. In the lounge, there is live singing and they sang happy birthday to my niece when it was her birthday. Karaoke bar located downstairs near the Asian restaurant and games room generally kicks off about 11pm. Songs can be requested and the DJ came to know us very well. FOOD- All inclusive. You could never go hungry here. There are 4 different placss to eat. Breakfast runs from 7.30-10.30am at 2 different restaurants- the main restaurant Agadir and Tamaris. Continental breakfast is also served at Tamaris between 11-12. Lunch is 12.30-3.30pm and 1-3 at Agadir. Dinner at the main restaurant Agadir is 7pm-10pm. There are two other restaurants which is Al Carte but needs to be booked at restaurant- Alhambra (Moroccan) & Kaori (Asian). Food at all of these were delicious, good variety of vegetarian, meat and fish. Pork is also available but not many options. The rabbit tagine is delicious. There is something for everyone! Fizzy Drinks are self serve but can easily get drinks from bar. Cocktails are pre mixed.
This hotel can be so much better with a few improvements.
Rooms: The rooms are arranged in three storey blocks, we were in a ground floor room. ( Be warned, there are no lifts in these blocks - so not great for the elderly or infirm). Our room was spacious and had good air conditioning and a ceiling fan. The beds were very firm but this didn't bother us. NO KETTLES OR TEA / COFFEE making facilities in the rooms which came as a real shock for a four star hotel. Room cleaning was excellent. The bathroom was also spacious with an excellent shower. The only downside was us being bitten by little flying insects. I put this down to a water feature in the courtyard that seems to encourage these insects. There were also a number of ants visiting us daily. POOL AND GROUNDS: The hotel has a great pool scene and the grounds are well kept and tended. BARS: On the first day, I discovered watered down whiskey, this changed the next day when I started ordering neat whiskey on the rocks. The cocktails are horrible pre-mixed and sugary. The beer on tap is drinkable. The bar staff are a mixture of people who are either happy to see you and serve you or you will get a few who are very miserable. FOOD: unfortunately, this hotel had some of the blandest, flavourless food we have ever eaten. I am a hobby cook and I know my way around seasonings and spices. A distinct lack of seasonings, spices and no garlic, ginger could be found in anything. We expected Morocco to have very flavoursome dishes but even their Tagines fell rather flat. My other observations are that there are little flies buzzing all over the open salad bars and on the cold meats and cheeses in their breakfast and dinner restaurant which is by the pools. Their specialty Asian restaurant is just another buffet version of their main restaurant with a slight Asian twist and is not air conditioned making it uncomfortable to eat in. IN CONCLUSION: A four star hotel with four star pools and grounds. Three star service and terrible cuisine. With a few changes, this hotel can really be great. My advice to the management is simple. Install some insect control equipment in your restaurants and perhaps in some of the rooms. Change your menu, keep one section for those people who like flavoursome dishes with spicy options. ( The rest of your counters are fine for those who want bland food) Train your staff to know that they are in the hospitality business, smiling and engaging with every guest is essential. The attitude displayed towards us by one or two was a little off putting. Dare I say it, we noticed that they seemed more engaging with Moroccan and white guests but with us being of Indian heritage, a few of the staff were a little bit cold. The vast majority of the staff were polite, helpful and engaging, especially the animation team who work hard to engage with people.
A lovely hotel
Having never stayed in a Riu hotel before I had no expectations of the brand; however I have stayed in many beautiful all inclusive hotels so definitely had an expectation from that point. This hotel is beautiful, the complex is huge, the pools are amazing, the gardens are well kept & its so nice to see so much greenery surrounding you. The rooms are large, I travelled with my two children aged 13 & 15 & we spent a fair amount of time in the room chilling out, without falling over each other. The cleaners worked their absolute socks off to keep everything spotless, towels were replenished regularly & the shower worked well. I honestly cannot fault any of that. The cleaners also replenished large bottles of water in your room each day. I personally would expect soft drinks in the mini fridge also, maybe this is something to consider for the future. The animation team are awesome; they work super long days, they are very friendly & inclusive & always stop for a chat; 1 suggestion from my previous experience would be to have a couple more pool games on top of the daily zumba & water polo (however, that may not be for everyone, just something I think would be good). The bar staff are amazing & always take the time to ask you how you are & have a chat. The hotel has a reasonable cocktail menu but would benefit from increasing their spirits to include very basic drinks like malibu or peach schnapps (I dont drink either but just found it strange that they werent available). A couple of improvement suggestions here would be to introduce a cocktail of the day (obviously different to the menu choices available) & also to stock bottles of water. In previous hotels Ive stayed at they have also walked around the pool offering freshly made smoothies, ice creams/lollies & fresh fruit - all of these would be a great addition. To the one thing that everyone wants to know about .... the food! I read the reviews before I went & they were really mixed but here is what I thought. I always holiday for 2 weeks & we those that do so all inclusive somewhat expect the food to be a little repetitive; this holiday was probably the strongest Ive felt that in all my times of going on holiday. My suggestion would be to operate a 2 week rotational menu that offers different dishes over the 14 nights so besides from your staple items, there is always something different. Dont get me wrong there was a large selection of fish (I dont each fish) and they had a few different meats available etc but this could definitely be improved. Why not have a themed station available each night like a spanish night, a mexican night, an english night etc. I didnt eat in the Moroccan restaurant but we did eat in the asian, this in my opinion wasnt anything spectacular. However both were very easy to book via the Riu app. If you're happy eating pizza, pasta, burgers & chips then you will not go hungry. We ate out once during the 2 weeks at the El Toro restaurant, which was approximately 20 minutes walk down the promenade. We also used the local equivalent app for our uber eats called Glovo & had MacDonalds delivered to the hotel. They open both restaurants for lunch which seems a bit of an overkill in my opinion. I think it would make more sense to have 1 main restaurant open for lunch then have a snack bar available throughout the day & night - again, just something I have seen at other hotels. The location of the hotel is ok, we only walked down the promenade as far as the restaurant we ate at so Im not sure what is further on. We experienced a few children begging but nothing too invasive. There is a very small supermarket across the road from the hotel but it doesnt stock a huge amount. The shop in the hotel is more a gift shop than a supermarket but again it has the basics. If you want more than that, there is a large supermarket about 5 minutes drive from the hotel which you can get a local taxi to. The hotel also offer a day pass for the hotel should you have friends or family staying locally & they want to visit for the day. My friends did this twice at the cost of 300MAD per day from 9am-5pm - well worth it. If you wake up & see a grey sky, dont panic! Apparently this is very normal in Agadir, the UV rays are still high so still put on suncream or you will burn. The clouds usually break around lunch time & you will see bright blue skies & sunshine! This didnt happen every day but I almost cried on our first day when I was greeted with that! Final tip, most mobile service providers charge extra to roam whilst in Morocco so consider buying a mini wifi box before travelling. You can then purchase a sim card at the airport when you land with prices ranging from £10 & upwards. The hotel wifi is great & I never experienced any issues at all, however we needed wifi when we left the hotel (to go shopping, out for dinner or when we went quad biking) hence why the need for a wifi box. All in all, we had a lovely holiday. Im not one for returning to hotels as the world is a huge place & there's lots of other places to stay but I wouldnt rule this hotel out as a prospective place to stay. This is an honest review & just my opinion.
