Home away from home

This place felt like a home away from home in large thanks to the incredibly friendly staff. Everyone was genuinely happy to see and it help you. The location, near to the Myrargata public bus stop, is perfect for day tours. Most your companies will offer pickup at the “blue stop” which is just out front and to the left (facing the harbor) of the hotel entrance. It’s also close enough to the city center to walk (weather permitting) to city tour meet up points or to tour the city on your own. This also doubled as great for me over New Years considering I could watch the display of fireworks from the hotel window vs the -6 C weather This location also kept you close to plenty of dining options including authentic Napoleon pizza at Flatey’s, Vietnamese Pho or try the popular fish dishes, Arctic char & fish (cod) and chips at Icelandic Fish & Chips just behind the hotel on Myrargata. The rooms themselves were mega comfy and spacious enough without being obnoxious. The attention to detail and various calls to action sporadically around the room as decor deserve a round of applause. The bathroom though presented as small was wonderful and stocked well enough that I didn’t require room service for the length of my weeks stay! The common areas offer traditional Icelandic figurines and provide an Instagram friendly aesthetic in more ways than one. I never caught breakfast because I was busy day touring but I did catch the happy hour and enjoyed the tacos and wings w blue cheese with a couple of beers at discounted pricing at the attached restaurant, Slippbarinn. The television, wifi struggled w connection. And speaking of wifi, you only get access to the free wifi on one device then are asked to upgrade for further access. At one point the electricity went out for a nice handful of hours (due to a cyclone larger than they’ve seen in a decade so…). I also had more than a few issues w my keys not working so be sure to ask they set the default expiration on the key cards to the day after your checkout to help avoid the frustration. If I return to Iceland, the Icelandair Reykjavik Marina will be first choice.

Icelandair Holidays USA - horrendous

The hotel staff was exceptional. The location was not close to downtown so you have a 20-min walk to get to restaurants and other attractions. The hotel breakfast buffet was good, love the Icelandic waffles and happy-marriage cake. There were so many problems with Icelandair Holidays USA I'm sure I'll run out of space. Bottom line, DO NOT book your trip w/ Icelandair. We tried to reschedule due to covid and got the run around via 17 emails. Running out of time, they gave us only one other week we would be allowed to change our travel, and it was a week my daughter had school. Zero other options despite the DO NOT Travel advisory from the US Travel consulate. When we checked in they had the wrong date of arrival for our reservation, which the staff quickly adjusted. The first tour as part of the package with Reyjkavik Sightseeing, they almost forgot to pick us and only did thanks to the exceptional hotel staff. The next day Reyjkavik Sightseeing (Icelandair Holidays tour partner) COMPLETELY FORGOT TO PICK US UP. First they said they had no record of our reservation and then said we weren't at the pick up when the bus came. We were. We had to get a shorter tour that did not include the Secret Lagoon. No offer of compensation was made to us. Rest of the trip went as planned, except upon returning home, discovered we caught covid while in Iceland. I don't know why they wouldn't let us reschedule the trip when all the info I read on the Icelandair website said we could get a travel voucher to travel later. Overall terrible experience w/ Icelandair - would not trust them, only out for the money and not the best interest of the customer,

OK but a bit small.

The hotel was fine, nothing special but ticked the boxes for what we needed. It was clean, comfortable, and staff on the whole were accommodating. The room was a bit smaller than I would usually like especially the bathroom, hardly any space in there! The room was serviced daily so no complaints there. Breakfast although it was ok, by the end of my trip I was skipping Breakfast as I just longed for something else. The coffee was terrible, very bitter tasting, even the latte or the cappuccino was bitter with not enough milk in it. The spa if not included is expensive for what it is, the steam room wasn't working so it was the sauna and the pool! If it's not part of your booking they ask for 3000isk and that's too much for what you get.
