You’ll find the sleepy village of Nikiana in the east of the Greek island of Lefkas (or Lefkada); it’s in the sparkling Ionian Sea, just off the west coast of the mainland. Nikiana has an intimate pebbled beach that is popular among tourists and locals alike due to its crystal clear waters and pleasant weather. The warm and calm conditions make Nikiana Beach great for water sports and sailing. If you’re after something a little sandier, take a short trip to the neighbouring bays where there are several Blue Flag beaches that have sun loungers and parasols for those much needed lazy days.

History and culture

Nikiana is close to the island’s capital, Lefkada Town, and it’s here that you can explore the ancient Santa Maura Castle to find out about the rich history of the island. Lefkada Town is the cultural hub of the island, with lots of entertainment and events happening throughout the year, including the International Festival of Folklore and Dance.

Nightlife

Nikiana is a small, picturesque resort that is known for being very laid back and peaceful. If you are looking for a vibrant club scene then perhaps try a larger resort on the island. There is, however, lots of restaurants and bars that are open until the early hours. Sit along the seafront and enjoy freshly caught seafood, whilst you watch the mountains turn a stunning, fiery red from the descending sunset.

K Beach Bar is a popular place to call on, in a prime position it looks over the stunning coastline. Visit in the daytime to soak up the summer sun on the loungers provided and to enjoy a delicious meal. Relax in the evening under palm trees before drinking fruity cocktails and dancing the night away in the lively, feel-good atmosphere.

    By hire car: This will give you total freedom to explore beyond the village at your own pace. And it’s well worth taking the time to see as much of this beautiful island as you can. You’ll find plenty of car hire companies to choose from at Preveza Airport. 

    By bike: Many hotels at the beach resorts will have bikes for hire, and it’s a really fun way to get around the village. You’ll love rising along the coastline on two wheels.

    By bus: Regular services run in and between the main beach resorts on Lefkada. They’re a quick and affordable way to hop between resorts if you fancy a daytrip to a nearby town.

    Events in Nikiana

    International Folklore Festival: The island has played host to this colourful event since the 1950s, and today it attracts more visitors than ever. Held in August, people flock here from all over the world to join in with the island’s celebration of its traditions. Expect colourful parades with dancers in traditional costumes, along with live music and lots of festivities on the beach.

    Good Friday: Easter is an exciting time around here. The island celebrates Good Friday in style, with local bands playing music as processions wind their way through the streets before meeting in the central square.

Summer really kicks in from June to late August, when the temperatures climb into the mid-20s and even the low 30s during heatwaves. Head to the south of the island from Nikiana and you’ll notice that it’s windier; no wonder it’s so popular with windsurfers!
