The official language spoken in Heraklion is Greek; however the Cretan dialect is also spoken in the city. You can get by on your holiday here without knowing the language, as English is widely spoken in tourist areas. Even in the surrounding small villages you usually won’t have any problems with communication for basic things like shopping or eating. But it’s always polite to try and learn a bit of the local language before travelling to a destination, so above you’ll find some useful phrases that you can use whilst talking to the locals. If you click on the green icons you’ll be able to hear how they are pronounced.
