You’ll probably recognise Santorini as the iconic Greek island of white and blue houses. This dreamy looking place is easy to get to by boat so it’s a popular destination for a day trip from Elounda. The island is actually the edge of a sunken volcano (caldera), so the sea here is the most stunning blue. There are some great beaches too, and as they’re made of black volcanic sand, the seaside scenery is a real contrast to Elounda. Check out the beaches at Perissia and Kamari, which are so good they’ve been awarded the Blue Flag.
Santorini is quite cosmopolitan so there are lots of stylish restaurants and cafés along the coast, but you really shouldn’t miss the island’s capital, Fira (or Thira). It’s an ancient town with cobbled streets, which means it’s great fun to explore. And as Fira is located above the caldera, you’re guaranteed to see some amazing views. They’re best absorbed over a leisurely lunch, and Fira offers plenty of restaurants to choose from.
