Stella Island Luxury resort & Spa - Adults Only

Welcoming guests aged 15+, this luxury resort, located on the northern coast of Crete, is surrounded by mountains and woods, while two sandy beaches are just a short walk away. Suiting both those seeking quiet contemplation and sports lovers, it is just 22km from the island’s capital Heraklion but still a world away from the bustling towns and cities.

The well-equipped spa features an indoor heated pool, sauna, hammam, jacuzzi, massage rooms and fitness room. Treatments available (for a surcharge) include deep hot stone massages, seaweed treatments, waxing, manicures and pedicures. Outdoors the lagoon pool area provides a place to relax in the sun. You’ll never be far from a bar offering cooling refreshments and snacks, as there’s five of them.

The more active holidaymakers will be spoiled for choice, with the large range of sporting activities available. Within the resort, the options on offer include tennis, beach volleyball, table tennis, football, mini-golf, petanque, basketball, yoga, TRX, Zumba and aerobics. Being so close to the sea, there’s the chance to go scuba diving, banana boating, water skiing or parasailing. For those who prefer to stay on dry land, there are hiking, mountain biking and horse riding opportunities.

The resort boasts six restaurants. The biggest being Kimata, open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, where you can experience show cooking and when it comes to desserts, there’s a huge range to choose from. Oceania is a formal, reservation only, option, with fantastic views across the Aegean from the rooftop. Vegans will feel at home at Vegera, with its variety of dishes, made from locally grown plants. Umami offers Asia cuisine, while Paraiso offers Mexican. Last, but by no means least, La Parilla is a meat-lovers paradise, offering succulent cuts, cooked slowly over the grill.

The room options at Stella Island range from luxurious to extravagant. Here facilities like WiFi, Queen sized beds, sofa safe, hairdryer, minibar, satellite TV, bathrobes, slippers and beach towels are standard. The only decision you’ll have to make is whether you want a swim-up room, jacuzzi, villa with private pool or just settle for the bliss offered with a standard room.

While there is plenty to do at the resort, guests shouldn’t leave Crete saying the only thing they saw in Heraklion was the airport. You must stop off at Knossos on the way, settled as early as the Neolithic period, it is possibly Europe’s oldest city, having been built between 3500 and 2100BC. A volcanic tsunami from nearby Santorini may have covered the site in ash but this has helped to preserve it. The island’s capital itself is modern, in comparison, having only existed since 824AD. You can see buildings dating as far back as the Venetian and Ottoman eras, while older discoveries can be found at Heraklion Archaeological Museum.

Beautiful hotel - but needs improvement!

May 2022 | nooM9402CM

Just stayed for a weeks break AI. On arrival were blown away by the chicness of the resort, but were slowly disappointed with a few issues that we had. Firstly I had emailed ahead to advise of our anniversary, on arrival the room had 2 champagne flutes, 2 spoons and 2 serviettes - Nothing else. We thought it may turn up day after as thats when our anniversary was, but no. After speaking to guest relations a bottle of fizz finally turned up when we had returned to our room very late that night so not really able to enjoy it. The rooms and pool areas are beautiful. The staff are polite and friendly and really want to help, but not sure this is always followed up as had a few issues with drinks and food being cold. Maybe a staff shortage issue. What really lets this hotel down though is the food. For a 5 star resort it is not good. Food cold on buffet, not enough choice. Pizza and pasta everyday lunch and dinner with 2 basic sauce options. Have been to 4 star hotels with much better food quality and choice. Maybe the younger generation think its wonderful?! The salads were good and the desserts were delicious. A la carte the asian was good, the greek, steak and mexican were not great. Sorry Stella Island you have the ability to be absolutely top notch, but it's not quite there yet.

Stunning hotel few improvements needed

We have just stayed here for 3 nights as a group of 7 for my mums birthday hotel literally looks amazing however there are a few things which could improve such as the check in process was very long winded the app wouldent work and I had someone else’s check in details the staff around the hotel all seem very friendly make sure when you go here you go to the restaurants the food was outstanding the buffet on the other hand (breakfast every time I had hot food it was freezing cold and the lunch buffet was also the same) the restaurants do get booked up very quickly so make sure you book in advance the rooms and the grounds are probably the nicest I’ve stayed in it’s so lovely!

Lovely but not perfect

May 2022 | JulieBrooks

The resort is really beautiful, stunning in fact, the staff are all lovely & the food and drink absolutely delicious hence why I’ve given it 4 stars but it’s not perfect & the little things that a luxury hotel should easily get right let this place down & stop it getting 5 stars, at least from us. Firstly the walls on the luxury swim ups are paper thin and you can hear peoples conversations next door so if privacy is important consider the overwater bungalows. Poor guy next door to us had a terrible cough and as a result it was very difficult to sleep. Not anyones fault but always worth knowing if you’re a light sleeper. Little things like housekeeping not leaving replacement toiletries, replenishing the tea/milk etc we’ve used for our morning cuppa have hardly been done unless I subsequently contact them. Not a big deal in isolation but when it’s almost every day it gets a bit annoying especially as other parts of housekeeping/mini bar replenishment have been done so they’ve been in the room. It’s not Stella Islands fault that other guests reserve sun beds for hours without using them or that some choose to play their own very loud music at the pool visibly annoying others around them and drowning out the chilled pool bar music but the hotel staff don’t do anything about it either. Again this is just our experience and others rave about Stella Island so I fully expect others don’t experience any of this & to be honest I wouldn’t review the negatives at all if it wasn’t such an expensive place to stay. I certainly bought into the Utopia surrounding this place before we came and as a result I have been disappointed in a lot of ways that I wouldn’t have necessarily been if I’d seen more balanced reviews so I think it’s important to be honest and manage expectations and if you don’t experience any of this on your trip all the better!
