The currency in Hurghada is the Egyptian Pound. While some places accept dollars and sterling, especially in the bigger resorts, we recommend using local currency.
There are several ways to get your Hurghada currency. You can exchange before you go, and many travellers find our online ordering service is super-convenient. You can have currency delivered to home or work (delivery is free over £500), or use our click-and-collect service so you can pop and get your travel money along with the rest of your holiday shopping. It’s commission free too, so you can be sure you’re getting great value. Our advice is when you order ask for a mix of denominations, to make it easier to pay for smaller purchases and to tip, especially when you first arrive.
Another option is to use your credit or debit card to withdraw Hurghada currency when you reach Egypt. This is convenient, but it can be expensive. Check whether your card provider charges fees for transactions abroad and check whether the ATM you are using in resort charges a fee.
If you like the added security of taking card rather than just cash, but you’re worried about hidden charges, then a travel money card such as Lyk may be an ideal solution. The Lyk card can be pre-loaded with your holiday funds, then used just like a standard card in most retailers and to withdraw cash. There are some things that you will need a credit card for though, so we recommend taking one as a back-up. The Lyk card can be topped up online, plus we offer 24-hour support should anything unexpected happen.
