A perfect location
We gather that there are probably some "swisher" hotels in the area but we chose Fort Arabesque for its location, a lovely beachfront spot on Makadi Bay with the most amazing snorkeling available right from the beach. And we loved both the hotel and the location. We've snorkeled elsewhere, eg Thailand, Malaysia, Mexico and the Maldives but the variety of fish, so close to the shore here, was unrivalled. We did a trip to an island in the Red Sea - a lovely trip but to be honest the array of fish and coral was no better than at the Fort. Water temp in January was fine actually, warmer than the Algarve in summer anyway! Air temp lovely in the sun, need a jacket or hoodie for the evenings. The grounds were stunning too, beautiful well tended gardens and lovely pool areas, including one (unheated) pool which looks like a new addition, with rocks and waterfall features. Stunning. The other pools are heated. Having said that we spent all of our time on the beach (and never had any problem getting sunbeds). We actually loved the style of the hotel, as per its name, it's designed like a Fort, so think warm shades of brick and stone, rather than marble and glass. Our room we really spacious (two double beds, sofa, desk, wall mounted TV (we booked standard room but it felt more like a superior)) We chose the West Wing as being quieter/adult only, the west part of the beach is also adult only.. We would choose that again. The bathroom was large with a walk in shower, but probably a little tired, could do with a re-grout but it was absolutely fine.. Shower gel, shampoo and conditional all provided, as were Tea/coffee making facilities. No iron in the room, we just took a travel one, plenty of flat surfaces. We were made to feel very welcome by the staff in West Wing Reception, West buffet restaurant, and the Beach Bar in particular. Really excellent service everywhere, eg I reported an issue with the shower head and it was replaced within the hour! Food is typical buffet style all inclusive, a bit hit and miss for vegetarians, we ended up with quite eclectic plates of food(!) but there was always plenty and the buffet restaurant also had pasta/pizza, wok/asian stations available.. The 159 a la carte, extra cost, restaurant is reputedly very good but we didn't try it. A couple of minor gripes, wifi is an extra charge for anywhere outside the foyer area. However, after seeing a tripadvisor review we bought a SIM at the airport (also seems to be available to buy at the hotel - East wing downstairs reception area) and that was amazing - wifi everywhere we went, beach, Red Sea Island trip, Luxor, all for $9 for the week using hotspot/tethering. My mobile had two SIM card options. Otherwise take an old (unlocked) mobile with you. Also the gym is an extra charge, I've not seen that at the two other all inclusive hotels we have been to elsewhere. Also worth noting that there is building work going on at the moment but this wasn't an issue for our room or where we were spending our time. Euros, US dollars and UK sterling are accepted everywhere. We took US dollars for tipping. I think that UK pound coins can be a bit of a problem for the staff, they are grateful to accept them but we were asked several times if we could change some coins they had been given for notes, perhaps coins can't be exchanged into local currency? PS you need cash I think for the entry visa you need if you get it at the airport on arrival. You can get a visa online before departure but it is easy to do at the airport. All in all we absolutely loved Fort Arabesque and intend to come back next year and escape the UK January blues for a few days!
Very pleasantly surprised
We were a bit wary of Egypt generally and some of the reviews of this hotel but as it turned out we had a great time and everything was very good. Superior room in the West Bay on 4th floor next to the penthouse was perfectly good with a decent view, the breakfast, lunch and dinner buffet food was good, especially the Indian and Chinese corner, the staff were all friendly and helpful, the grounds were lovely, the beach was good and the snorkelling with so many colourful fish was a delight. My only minor moans would be the lack of free wifi other than in the lobby, the safe not being screwed to the wall and petty charging for the gym, pool balls etc. We would definitely return.
Beyond Fantastic Holiday!
Experienced the best week here and sad to be home ! Amazing resort with amazing staff. Animation team were great fun and did their best to get everyone up. Bar staff were excellent and pool bar team were fantastic. Even the lifeguards were friendly and chatty. And all of them smiled and were happy ! Room was spacious and clean and our room cleaner Ali was a master at the towels!! Food was tasty on every occasion whether it was breakfast or lunch or dinner. Lots of buffet variety- i especially enjoyed the Asian corner where your meal is cooked to order as you wait. The sweets/desserts looked incredible. The grounds and lawns were really cared for and lush and green with pretty pink flowers everywhere, absolutely beautiful. Special thanks go to Ashraf at the pool bar who made fabulous cocktails for me whenever I wanted, also to Mohammed who helped with Ashraf went on his break. Mena at the beach bar was always attentive and also Abanoub. Yousef at the pizza place was friendly and always happy to see us. Mostafa at west bay reception was a delight and always happy to help with any questions. The animation team Neymar in particular was such fun! Haytham the lifeguard was great too. They all work so hard and are a credit to Fort Arabesque. Thank you for a wonderful holiday!!!
