With its stunning beaches, charming resorts and delicious home-cooked food, Cyprus is a true gem of the Mediterranean. Surrounded by crystal clear blue seas, the island’s full of beautiful contrasts as you venture from quaint villages to secluded coves, vibrant beaches and fascinating historical sites.
Cyprus is divided into two, with Turkish rule in the north and Greek rule in the south. Each side of the island is equally picturesque and intriguing, with everything from ancient Roman ruins to cosmopolitan cities just waiting to be explored. Nowadays it’s easy to cross from one side of the island of the other, giving you the chance to experience two unique cultures all on one holiday. The best place to experience the Turkish and Greek parts of the island is in the vibrant capital, Nicosia.
With its glorious weather, Cyprus is ideal if you love the sun. If you’re travelling as a family, take a day trip to the tranquil Fig Tree Bay where the little ones can paddle in the clear, shallow waters. Look out for turtles at Lara Bay Beach, or party all day and night at Nissi Beach.
Exploring beyond the beach, you’ll discover beautiful pine forests, vast mountains and picturesque vineyards, perfect for hiking and cycling adventures. The island is also dotted with historic sights, where you can see restored Roman villas, ancient burial grounds, and striking Byzantine churches.
When you get hungry, the local tavernas are the best place to enjoy traditional cuisine. From meze taster dishes serving up freshly-grilled halloumi, hummus, tender calamari and sheftalia sausages, you’ll have plenty of choice as you feast on delicious home-cooked meals. On the Turkish side of the island, the kebabs are a must try. Finish your meal with a strong coffee and sweet, sticky baklava.
