Deciding between Average & Poor - Had to choose poor

Travelled to Grand Memories Dec.28-Jan.5 with my gf, I have been to Cuba 20-25 times and have seen it all, and know exactly what to expect in Cuba. I love Cuba and don't travel there for the food. I am aware of the current limitations due to the economic situation. This hotel is rated #15 of 95 Hotels in Varadero on Trip Advisor. This gave me high expectations going to Grand Memories and it was my first visit to Grand Memories. I really had greater expectations due to the price I paid. It was not cheap. Yes, I travelled there during the peak season. If I had a good deal or paid average prices, I would feel different, but paying top dollar does ceate certain expectations especially when it isn't your first rodeo. Our room (24226) in block 24 was fine, the cleaning service and maid was satisfactory. The thing that bugs me is my vape and Airpods disappeared from our room. I am not accusing anyone, but it was baffling and strange. The beach and water are typical Varadero - amazing. The wifi was surprisingly good and accessible even on the beach. It is not as strong or reliable as we are used to in Canada but a major improvement since the last time I was in Cuba. Rogers has a $14/day for network service which was also good. I would not recommend the Diamond Club, the benefits are not that apparent. The food was ok and typical Cuban style but disappointing for a resort with the rating that Grand Memories has - remember I have been to MANY resorts in Varadero and all over Cuba and resorts at this price have always been much better. Is it due to the current economic situation or is it this particular resorts issue? This is my first trip since covid began so I don't know - the only way to know is to go back to other resorts and try it out. That I cannot say and do not want to make a judgment on just yet, other than the fact when we pay big dollars for a week in paradise, we expect a little bit better! The wait for the PCR test was 3-4 hours. This is the life we live now with the pandemic and we never had anywhere to go that day, but it was frustrating to stand in line in the hot spa building for so long. I hope this situation can be improved. The cart drivers are an interesting bunch. New Years eve one driver was definitely under the influence. Glad nobody got hurt as they really fly around in those little cars! The biggest annoyance is the influx of Cuban local guests over the weekend. They come in hordes starting Friday, swoop down, devour everything in sight and vanish by Monday. It was very noticeable and not desirous! We are used to being served at a certain standard, but these people have only 1 or 2 days to maximise there visit to a place where the food is abundant and free. So the paying tourists have to put up with it for 2-3 days over the weekend. It was a serious turn off - the pushing in the food lines, the uncouth behaviour at the restaurants, bars and buffet. Overall I had to put poor because 'average' would have been acceptable. But at the price I paid, I would ever return to Grand Memories due to the massive weekend influx of Cubans which I have never seen before at any resort in Cuba.

I was there for christmas and I got santuary and the so called buttler is not really one. She was there 20 minutes first day making me restaurants resrvation and that is it. I think this is some money wasted in a salary that doenst do any difference for customers. Also the santuary place, where i was , wasa pretty place , nice quiet pool , nice room but its restaurant as well as the chinesse not good food at all. The food was not good flavor although the service was excellent. I was said they pay a special cheft,umm really ,another waste of money.They better find a local cheft that knows how to cook cuban food with flavor.The chinese restaurant a shame ,every customer leaving the plates on table for the bad taste.The santuary bar ,the best of all , great selection and nice service.

The weather was amazing! The resort itself was good, the beach is beautiful and the staff were lovely. The food was ok, not great, but we knew this going in. We preferred the snack bar to the restaurants. It was an enjoyable week with the caveat that you MUST to take responsibility for your health safety (distancing and masking) as the other guests (mainly Russians) don't seem to know of Covid. If the GM reads this review, PLEASE have your staff enforce the guest mask-wearing rules. NO STAFF asked guests to put on masks in the lobby, in the store, and ESPECIALLY IN THE BUFFET area, plus guests were not distancing in the buffet or lobby!!!! The hotel hand sanitizers were empty, so bring your own. Finally, we had a broken toilet in our room and my kids had a broken sink in their room but the staff never did arrive to fix either and we had asked twice. If I returned, I would book The Sanctuary section.
