Girls Cuba Trip December 2021

Jan 2022 | teresahP4877EF
My 2 friends and I booked a girls trip to Iberostar Laguna Azul and we had such an amazing and relaxing vacation there! When we arrived on Dec 11 it was very tranquil and it before the huge wave of Christmas tourists, so it felt like we had the resort to ourselves. I found that the hotel staff and Cuba in general were very good at making the space COVID safe and wearing masks, but I think it should've been more enforced for the attendees. The beach was gorgeous and there was plenty of space to relax. The staff were very sweet to us and we could see the smiles from behind their masks. The services like towel, drinks and clean up were amazing! The entertainment team was the absolute best, from the first day Leo and Ronaldo welcomed us with open arms and were so fun to have around. The entire team including Leo, Ronaldo, Heyneken, Candy Boy, Lady Gaga, Brown Sugar and Chocolate were such a great group of people and are well deserving of praise! The shows every night were something we really looked forward to, each night with something new! The resort and our room were very clean and our maid Oda was fantastic, she always left us cute towel creatures after she was finished with our room and we left notes back and forth to each other! The food I found to be a bit lacking, the fruits and dairy did not taste fresh. The meals tasted like homecooked food if you're into that, which we didn't mind and after the first day it grew more on us and we enjoyed it. Our servers Solaris and Yadeira were phenomenal, they were the sweetest and their presence was so nice to have during our meals. I highly recommend the excursions from Canada, we went on the Havana tour and Jeep Adventure, and both were so fun! The jeep tour we go to go off roading on a manual car, drive a speed boat, jump in a clear water grotto and eat amazing Cuban food. I wish that there was some sort of bulletin at the front desk, listing our ongoing activities for the day. The only way we found out about activities were by word of mouth, on the day of. Something I also want to point out was a few racist incidents. Being one of the only Eastern Asian groups there, I felt like eyes were constantly on us and we heard a few racist comments from other tourists. Another instance happened when a staff member unknowingly made a racist gesture at us; it was not malicious but the harm was still there. If you're coming from Canada, I know some people do not recommend to exchange to Cuban Pesos, but from our experience I would recommend this. As the smallest CAD bill is quite pricey to give as frequent tips, exchanging to CUP was very helpful and almost the entire trip we tipped in pesos. I would recommend to exchange it with staff or tour guides as they are eager to exchange with you for an excellent rate. I'd also recommend bringing toiletries like shampoo, toothpaste etc. to give to staff as they really appreciate those!

Staff are friendly and helpful as this was our second trip to this hotel and were known by most staff specially at the bars. Front desk/reception are helpful but did not resolve my complaint to fix phone in my room from day one which was not working and never fixed after repeated complaints. Food at the buffet was okay and repetitious but mostly not warm. The biggest factor was the mask policy which was not enforced and a particular demographic seemed to not care and were not told to keep their masks on inspite of close proximity.

Place very good, services very poor.

Average hotel level, certainly not 5*. Food cold, beverages on the request only, long queues everywhere, drunken and noisy Russians everywhere. Especially the Russians take full plates of food, they eat little, most of the food is thrown away. On the beach broken glass from drinks, food leftovers. Lack of plates in both dining rooms, birds are sitting on a plate with food in an outdoor dining room. Normally there is no wine, no beer, no gin - mañana.... Internet connection falls out in 60 minutes (even if you paid non-stop www connection). Defects in the rooms (lighting, water, locks, doors,...) Nevermore!!!
