New York – Weather

New York has four distinct seasons, so pick what time of year suits you best and make sure you pack some suitable clothes. The weather in New York can get really cold in winter, but the city has a magical feel when it snows, while summer’s nice and warm. If you’re going in autumn, don’t miss the falling leaves in Central Park.

Pack layers for changeable weather

New York weather is changeable in any season, and it’s not unusual to have a balmy summer’s day followed by a freezing day of rain. With average highs of 25ºC in July, summer’s a popular time to visit the city and explore outdoor attractions such as the Statue of Liberty, or Chinatown. Winters can be chilly, with temperatures dropping well below zero and heavy snow making driving or even walking along the sidewalks tricky.

There’s no such thing as a best time of year to visit New York, as it really depends on what you want to see and do during your trip. Winters here are magical, particularly the run up to Christmas as the city is beautiful during the holiday season. When the weather in New York is wintry, pack your cosiest clothes and enjoy a show in the Theater District or strolling around the Metropolitan Museum of Art (also known as the Met).

Some of our favourite places to visit in New York include the iconic Empire State Building, Coney Island (a great spot to take the kids in the summer), Central Park and SoHo, where you’ll be able to shop until you drop, whether it’s sunny or rainy. On rainy days there’s plenty of culture indoors to check out. The Museum of Modern Art is one such must-see.
