You'll find plenty of things to do in Riviera Maya. As well as white sandy beaches and great nightlife, there are lots of ways to learn more about Mexican history and wildlife. You'll be able to explore some exciting adventure parks too, so Riviera Maya's got all you need for a great holiday.
Places to go
Just off the Cancun-Tulum highway, between Chemuyil and Xel-Há you'll find a turn off for Xcacel-Xcacelito. These arcs of golden sand are two of the cleanest and most beautiful beaches in Riviera Maya. They're off the tourist trail, so a visit here's a peaceful way to spend the day. If you're into snorkelling, you'll love the chance to explore the coastal reef at the northern end of the beach. Understandably, this section's protected, so there's no sun cream, food or drink on this part of the beach.
Just across from Cancun is Isla Mujeres, a laid-back and tranquil island. It's known for beautiful beaches, calm turquoise waters, and a friendly vibe. You could visit Hacienda Mundaca, built by the famous pirate Fermin Mundaca, the Hacienda includes ruins and a solar clock garden dedicated to La Triguena. You can get to the island by water taxi or organised tour.
Attractions
If you're looking for thrilling things to do, Riviera Maya won't disappoint. You'll love Xplor Park, a natural adventure park with 14 zip lines going through lush jungle, underground caves filled with rock formations, as well as the chance to go rafting. It's open from 9am to 5pm, and you can drive yourself there or join a tour. For something more chilled out, visit Cenote Azul, a beautiful underground pool with clear blue water. You can jump in from the small cliff or spend an afternoon snorkelling among the rocks.
Places to visit
Visiting the ruins at Coba gives you the chance to channel your inner Indiana Jones or Lara Croft. Many of the ruins are yet to be excavated, so they're hidden under mysterious mounds and vines. You'll be able to see La Iglesia, a tall pyramid that forms the centre of the ruins, and walk along sacbes, paved Mayan walkways. Climb Nohoch Mul for great views or the surroundings. Coba's open from 8am to 4pm. Tulum ruins are one of the best excursions on Riviera Maya. You'll see a 13th century Mayan castle, built on a 12-metre limestone cliff over turquoise Caribbean waters, as well as frescoes that depict the Mayan world. Tulum ruins are open 9am to 5pm, and we recommend arriving early to beat the crowds.
