Holidays in Sunny Beach

More than 800 hotels line Sunny Beach's 8 kilometres of golden sand on Bulgaria's Black Sea coast. As a more affordable - but no less sunny - alternative to Mediterranean resorts, Sunny Beach is a popular beach holiday destination for everyone from single travellers to families. The lively resort offers numerous water-sport activities by day, and live music and discos at night. Sunny Beach also has an amusement park, a water park and a small zoo.

Often described as a huge 'beach fairground', the resort offers much more than the chance to improve your tan. Activities in Sunny Beach include water skiing, horseback riding and even quad biking. Families can enjoy water slides in the Action Aquapark and a miniature golf course. Restaurants have extensive menus, and many have small playgrounds for children. Nightlife options in this party town include bar crawls and discos.

The famed golden sands of the Black Sea are the main draw here, as they gently slope towards a calm and clean sea, which can get warmer than the Mediterranean. One of the largest beaches in Europe, at 8km long and 50 metres wide, Sunny Beach offers plenty of room for your beach umbrella. Beach Boulevard is one of the main places to go in Sunny Beach, offering hundreds of vendor stalls and shops. Dining is cheap and plentiful - from street-side kiosks offering pizza and kebabs to restaurants serving everything from Mexican to Indian cuisine.

If you're bored of swimming, there are plenty of other sea-based activities in Sunny Beach, such as jet-skiing, banana boating, windsurfing and diving into the depths of the Black Sea on a scuba diving course. Beyond the beach, Action Aquapark offers a lazy river, water slides and mini zoo; a karting track sits opposite. Sunny Beach also has bowling, quad-biking and horseback riding. For a break from all the action, take a short bus ride to the quaint old seaside town of Nessebar, where you can roam the cobbled streets, see its ancient ruins and have a relaxing meal.

When the sun goes down, the party begins - both on land and sea. Cocktail bars, discos and casinos dot the shoreline. Beachfront bars serve drinks and barbecue into the early hours. Nightclubs add light shows to the pulsing electronic music. Some revellers prefer to spend the evening partying on a yacht in the middle of the Black Sea. One of the popular things to do in Sunny Beach is go on a bar/disco crawl, where you can meet other travellers and dance the night away.

Families: Spend the afternoon floating along the lazy river at Action Aquapark.

Culture buffs: Take a day trip to Nessebar for a picturesque example of Bulgarian heritage and archaeology.

Party-goers: Join an organised bar crawl to discover the top spots for cocktails and dance music.

By foot: The resort is not very large, and the main beach strip is 2.5 km long. Many areas are pedestrian-only.

By train: A 'mini-train' carries tourists along the promenade, from one end of the beach to the other.

By bike: For a faster option than walking, hire a bicycle - or stand out from the crowd on your rented Segway, electric scooter or rickshaw.

By taxi: Agree a price with the driver before you set off.

Clubbing: Sunny Beach has a constant schedule of themed parties and concerts, from celebrating the full moon to showcasing a visiting DJ.

Competitions: Contests on the beach are numerous, well advertised and tend to be centred on the twentysomething visitor.

Boat parties: Several companies organise events on yachts that traverse the lake.
