An excellent weeks break in Madiera. Hotel in superb location, Close to, but separate from the city centre.. Room cmfortable and quiet, with good views - it faced away from the entrance and the Casino. Hotel staff friendly and welcoming. Hotel food very good if a bit expensive, However there are many excellent and cheaper restaurants in walking distance. Madiera is a beautiful island. The trips out that we took were very good and well organised. We were very impressed with our guide on a Levada walk. The only negative points were with the hotel room which although very comfortable could have been better cleaned, especially the bathroom, and tea and coffee making facilities would have been welcome. The reception desk seemed a little inefficient.

Hotel was very nice and comfortable and if you like very quiet then this is the place. Hotel entertainment was almost non existent, internal bar was not open during the day and the pool bar was overpriced. Apart from breakfast we never notgiced anyone eating in the hotel and this does not seem to be an area they promote to any great degree, everything is geared towards getting you to go to their casino next door. This was our first visit to Madeira and we found the resort extremely quiet with very little activity or any focal point. If you like flowers and walking tours round a small island then it may be worth a visit, can't see us going back until we get to about 85.

the only points I would like to make are it would have been good of Thomas Cook to have informed us that we were actually flying with Thompson airways as the baggage allowance is differant. When arriving at hotel it would have been a lot easier to have had more at the desk to speed up the booking in procedure. These points however did not spoil our holiday.

Minuses - Check-in took ages over 40 minutes waiting in a queue. Shower not very powerful. Tea at breakfast cold and very weak. Pluses - Rooms very clean , architecture of building amazing. Position very well located lovely views over the hills and cruise terminal.

The hotel is in a great location overlooking the port and its just a few minutes walk to the centre of Funchal. However there are a couple of things I would mention to anyone thinking of staying here. There are no car parking facilities which for a 5 star hotel is a bit disappointing. So if you hire a car the choices are parking in nearby (very busy) side streets or at the adjacent casino where you can expect to pay approx 7 euro per day, tho its free between 2100-0600! The other downside is the expense of drinks at the hotel - we all expect to pay a premium but more than double is taking the michael, no wonder it was deserted most evenings, that and the complete lack of any entertainment.
