I stayed here as a base for a week of walking Madeira's levadas and mountains. The hotel proved a great base, with a good room, lovely shower, spotless throughout, decent food, and nice and quiet. The highlight was the friendly staff, very helpful without ever being obsequious. As a (fairly small) downside, the hotel was on the other side of town to the departure point of most buses out around the island. However it was an easy half hour walk, or there were plentiful buses to the centre for those feeling lazier.

The hotel has been partly refurbished, unfortunately the room I was given had not. The furniture was circa 1970's, the carpet had 11 different patches in it of varying shades of blue. The grouting in the bathroom was filthy and black which meant I had to try to avoid touching the walls when taking a shower. The corners of the room in the bathroom and the bedroom were filthy. The room had a very unpleasant smell to it which I couldn't identify but it certainly wasn't cleaning products. I am not sure why we paid the same amount as the people who stayed in the refurbished rooms! Thomas Cook should of notified us when we booked that we would be in an old room rather than the new ones which are advertised on their website!! The staff were not rude but certainly not friendly, I didn't have one 'good morning' during the entire week I was there and a smile was a very rare event. Would not return there and would certainly not recommend it!

Once we arrived in Madeira everything was well organised, from meeting the rep at the airport, being taken to the coach, to being taken to the hotel. The only problem we found was booked into our room early , our luggage arrived a bit later than we expected. The room was very comfortable and the balcony had a child freindly fence added to it which showed the hotel acts in a responsible way for families with young children. We were on a half board basis and the food was excellent with great variety every day, especially with fussy children. The weather was perfect, there was plenty to do for the children like the aqua park near the airport and Port Moniz which is a man made Lido incorporating the natural coast line. This is a safe environment for children but beware as the sea water is VERY salty. Funchal is a lovely touristy place and the market place is just delightful. If you have a chance to book the Santa Maria tour to look for Dolphins then do. We saw some Dolphins and after that we were taken to another location where we could swim in the sea safely. All in all a great holiday and we're thinking of going at Christmas for the great festivals which take place.
