Disappointed! Not a 4 T premium in our opinion. Self catering rooms without kitchen area. Very basic rooms. Dated bathroom. Location great - 10 min walk to Fira centre. Pools looked beautiful. Bar service ok when not many in - otherwise waited ages. Breakfast - get there early as people tend to stock pile pastries and take them out with them - not replenished after about 9.30am. Unfortunately would not stay here again.

Not 4* accommodation, door to apartment rotten wood at the bottom half. No sleep at times until sometimes 4:0 AM due to hen, stag or wedding parties returning from night out in the town. Possibly ok if you don't have an apartment near the bar and top pool area. First time I can honestly say I wouldn't return to this hotel. Breakfast was the most basic and poor quality I have ever had in a 4* star hotel. The Island on a lighter note is wonderful.

El Grekko is a large but not sprawling complex of attractive apartments. There are 3 outdoor pools, a dining hall and bar. We went in early May. There are very likely pros and cons to going at this time, not least that I suspect the likes of Thera and Oia would be heaving at peak season, however, it was very windy and often overcast when we went! Pros: It was very quiet, despite being assured that the resort was fully booked. Apparently, the majority of the guest were attending business conferences or weddings. Either way, we we sharing the pool area with no more than 4 or 5 others at any time. We had half board. The food was a hot or cold buffet for breakfast and evening meal. The breakfast menu didn't change much, but then I seldom change my breakfast menu at home! There was sill a wide choice.of fare from memory: Greek salad, scrambled eggs, poached eggs, bacon (this is wafer-thin squares, but still tasty), hotdog type sausage, baked beans, tomato, cereal, yoghurt, (tinned) fruit and sponge cake! The evening meals were, understandably, more varied and posed no small temptation to have a bit of everything.... so I did! There was always Greek salad, stuffed vine leaves and feta (or very similar) cheese. All dishes were Greek (and very tasty), so maybe not for you if you're not keen on foreign food, but there wasn't anything "outlandish", mainly beef, pork and chicken with delicious ratatouille! The resort is 5 minutes walk from the edge of Thera and only a little further to the bus depot. The buses are excellent value (a maximum of 2.20 Euro one-way per person) and visit all the main attractions. Be warned that they can get quite crowded and will pack people on until every square inch of room is occupied! There is wifi but the signal is pretty poor and slow when you can connect. Cons: Although our room was beautiful; marble floors, 4-poster bed, etc. The mattress was very hard, lumpy and uncomfortable. The bathroom was perfectly adequate but had a 3/4 size bath with a shower & curtain. The bath had fairly high sides making it a bit worrisome to get in and out of. It would have been so much nicer to have had a walk-in shower. You have to charge any devices overnight as the room key fob is required to activate the power. Watch out for the prices for some drinks. While the majority of the usual fare was well priced (4 Euro for a large beer, 3 Euro for a glass of wine), I made the mistake of being sold a 5 star Metaxa. Very pleasant, but at 9 Euro for a small shot in a heated brandy glass! Overall, a lovely resort, very clean with friendly staff. A good base for seeing the sights from.

El Greco is a large complex and by late September it didn't seem crowded. Check in was hectic as a lot of people arrived at the same time. However, our cases were taken to our room by a helpful member of staff who pointed out facilities en route. The room (we had paid for an upgrade) was large, clean and well appointed. Our room had a view onto a vine plot, which made it quiet. Rooms with a caldera sunset view front onto the busy main road. Everything worked well although the bathroom was dark. All hotel staff were helpful and efficient, the maid was particularly keen on replenishing shower gel, shampoo etc. Food and drink in the pool bar was reasonably priced and good quality and service was excellent. Breakfast from 08.00 to 10.00 was buffet style with an excellent cold foods selection. It paid not to be late for breakfast as hot food could be tired and service closed on the dot. We didn't try dinner in the hotel as there is a huge range of places in Thira. The choice of pools meant we always found sun loungers. Pool water was cold though! WiFi worked in the room as well as in public areas. We didn't try the spa which also housed a small heated indoor pool. It's a five minute walk on the level from El Greco into Thira with adequate pavement, a lovely view of sunset over the caldera and not too dark coming back at night. What's not to like?

We spent two weeks at El Greco as we were keen to have a relaxing two week break. Our first impressions on arrival were that the whole complex looked stunning and was extremely clean. Reception staff v friendly. We were located right on the edge of the development which was nice and quiet ( no issues getting sun beds like some of the pools closer to reception) however it did still look a little unfinished with some large (conferencing style) buildings still being fitted out. Our room was a good size with modern shower room and nice fittings. The bar was very efficient and good for lunches - though if you shop about in Thira you will get better value. We were half board and the evening food was generally pretty reasonable - nothing spectacular but always a good variety. In all a very pleasant place and an easy walk into Thira on a decent footpath. ( 10 mins max).
