Why choose Norwegian Star?

Few ships afloat can claim to have as many dining and leisure options as those belonging to the Norwegian Cruise Line fleet. Built in 2001, the Norwegian Star was designed specifically around the line’s unique Freestyle cruising package. As a consequence, there are more than a dozen different dining options on board this ship which makes an appearance on both sides of the Atlantic over the next 12 months.

Destinations and Itineraries

This ship offers slightly longer cruises than other members of the Norwegian Cruise Line fleet. Until September, the Star tours the Baltic capitals on a nine day cruise, making five ports of call from its Copenhagen home, Warnemunde in Germany, a day at sea, Tallinn in Estonia, St Petersburg, Russia's UNESCO world-heritage second city and the Finnish capital of Helsinki. Next stop is Stockholm in Sweden, followed by another day at sea and a return to Copenhagen.

On September 10, an epic 33 day cruise takes the ship to Miami, making 15 ports of call, including all the Baltic cruise stops and then calling at Scotland, the Faroe Islands, Portugal, and then six days at sea before arriving in Miami. Up until February 2014, the ship then embarks on a series of cruises through the Panama Canal between Miami and Los Angeles.

Typically these 14-night cruises make four stops in Mexico, with Costa Rica, Panama and Colombia featuring on the itinerary.

This is a ship that promises adventure and discovery both on and off shore. From the Baltic capitals to the Panama Canal, the Norwegian Star explores the historic and the exotic in Europe and either side of the North American continent, while ensuring that every passenger is travelling in style and luxury.

There is a raft of leisure facilities on board the Norwegian Star. Two swimming pools and six hot tubs, an indoor lap pool, a sauna and a steam room and the Barong Spa beauty salon can account for innumerable lost hours on board. For the more active there is a jogging track, a sports court for basketball and volleyball, two golf driving nets, and the Barong Fitness Centre with a full-service gym and daily aerobics and fitness classes. Teenagers have their own dedicated space on the Star. The Teen’s Club has a video wall, jukebox, table football and air hockey. Younger children can head for the Splash Down Kid’s Pool, ideal for paddling and fun in the sun with slides and a hot tub. Planet Kids offers arts and crafts activities, children’s films, computers and games, plus a jungle gym and a quiet place for toddlers - all of which ensures that the Norwegian Star’s rating for children is very good. The dress code is casual and comfortable during the day and smart casual in the evenings. The optional formal nights require gentlemen to wear a dinner suit or dark suit and for ladies to wear a cocktail dress. International entertainment is provided in the three-tier Stardust Theatre. Alternatives include Dazzles nightclub and cabaret room, a circus-themed karaoke bar, the Spinnaker Lounge and the casino. There is also a library, an internet cafe, a business centre and a cinema.

There are 1,120 cabins on the Norwegian Star, 506 of which have a balcony. Another 250 have an ocean view and 364 are located on the inside of the ship. Cabins are well-designed, with enough storage space and compact bathrooms. Even the inside cabins, which have twin beds that convert into a queen size double, can accommodate an extra two passengers making them an excellent option for families. If more space is required, there are three bedroom garden villa suites that can sleep eight, Owner’s Suites which can sleep six and two bedroom family suites.

The dining options on board Norwegian Cruise Line ships set them apart from their competitors. Many of the options are included in the price and passengers can broaden their choice by paying a reasonable supplement. The main dining rooms are the Versailles, which serves quality gourmet food, or the Aqua, which has a broader menu to include more healthy options. More informal offerings include the Market Cafe and kid’s cafe, a family-friendly buffet, the Blue Lagoon snack bar which serves light bites around the clock, the Java cafe with its speciality coffees and pastries, and the Topsiders Bar & Grill by the Oasis pool out on deck.
