Why choose Norwegian Gem?

One of the newest and largest members of the Norwegian Cruise Line family, the Norwegian Gem is a big ship based in the Big Apple, from where it sails to the sunny shores of the Bahamas and the Caribbean, and takes passengers on a voyage to witness the breathtaking beauty of New England and Canada in the autumn. Wherever the destination, this is a ship that’s filled with entertainment, dining and accommodation choices destined to satisfy every taste.

Destinations and Itineraries

Until the middle of September the ship sails on seven night cruises from its New York home to two ports in the Bahamas, Nassau and Great Stirrup Cay. Then it heads north for a Canada and New England itinerary that allows passengers to witness the autumn foliage that has made this region world-famous. Among the five ports of call on these seven night cruises are Halifax in Nova Scotia, Newport in Rhode Island and Boston.

From October 19th the ship then heads south on a nine day cruise to the Eastern Caribbean. After two days at sea, the programme typically includes visits to San Juan in Puerto Rico, St Maarten in the Leeward Islands, St Thomas in the US Virgin Islands, and Samana in the Dominican Republic. Another two days at sea follow as the ship heads back to its New York Home. The only variation to this itinerary is a two day New York Weekend Escape that sails around the Big Apple but does not make any ports of call.

Passengers really are spoilt for choice when they choose a holiday on board the Norwegian Gem. The huge array of accommodation, dining, leisure and entertainment options mean the days and nights at sea are packed with variety. Combined with an exciting cruise programme, and its rejection of the rigid dress codes, dining options and meal times found on other liners, it is easy to understand why this large ship is making waves.

The Norwegian Gem has three swimming pools. In addition there are six hot tubs, a fitness centre, a sauna and a steam room. Sports on board include a jogging track, a court for tennis, volleyball and basketball, as well as golf and table tennis. Youngsters have their own dedicated space and activities programmes on board the ship. There is a kids’ pool and the Tree Tops Kids’ Club - which has a cinema, nursery and toddler’s rest area as well as creative activities. Passengers more interested in keeping their credit card active than they are their body can head to the Trade Routes Boutique or the art gallery. Those who want to keep their mind active can head to the library. The ship’s dress code is casual and comfortable during the day and smart casual in the evenings. On the optional formal nights, men are required to wear a dark suit or a dinner suit and ladies are required to wear a cocktail dress. After dinner entertainment is provided in the Stardust Theatre, which presents Las Vegas and Broadway style spectaculars. The Leopard Lounge offers more cabaret style entertainment. There are a host of bars on board, as well as a casino, a card room video arcade, and a cigar club.

There are 1,233 staterooms on board, 565 of which have a private balcony - another 263 are blessed with an ocean view. Cabins are small but well-designed with sufficient storage space. Suites range from 26 square metre to the 395 square metre garden villas, which sleep up to eight people and include a living room, dining room, private garden with hot tub, and access to a private courtyard area and the services of a concierge and butler. When all the staterooms have double occupancy the ship can carry 2,382 passengers, and with a 1,000-strong crew, this creates a ratio of one crew member for every 2.4 passengers.

The dining choices are what set Norwegian Cruise Line apart from most other cruise lines. There are 17 places to eat from a quick snack and a light bite to a formal dinner over several courses. The two main dining rooms are the Grand Pacific and the Magenta. Meals here are complimentary. The Garden Café and Kids café make a good family friendly alternative. The Great outdoors is a deck buffet as is the poolside Topsiders Bar & Grill and the Java Café, which serves speciality coffees as well as pasties and cookies. The Blue Lagoon is a 24-hour pit stop serving hot and cold snacks. For an additional cover charge, the choices continue to include the Teppanyaki Japanese Hibachi restaurant, the Orchid Garden pan-Asian restaurant, the South American-inspired Moderno Churrascaria and La Cucina Italian and Le Bistro French representing European cuisine. There is also an elegant steakhouse restaurant serving prime cuts.
