We all know that going on holiday is our chance to get away from the stresses and strains of everyday life and recharge our batteries. But have you ever stopped to think just how beneficial a truly relaxing break can be for you? You’ll be pleasantly surprised.
To mark National Relaxation Day, we thought we’d share with you some of the excellent benefits of donning your trendy sandals and over-sized sun hat and let you know why going on holiday is so good for you. What better excuse do you need to book another holiday?
Holidays give you the chance to catch up on some much needed sleep. You can lie-in in the mornings (as long as you don’t miss the breakfast buffet!) and then who isn’t guilty of unintentionally falling asleep and having an impromptu afternoon nap on a sun lounger? And what’s more, being in a relaxed, holiday frame of mind means that you will sleep better too. Getting enough sleep will improve your mental performance, help prevent premature ageing and can prevent illness by strengthening your immune system.
Taking time out to de-stress on holiday can also improve your future health too. Too much stress in your everyday life can be bad for your heart. Relax regularly and you’ll be doing your body a big favour!
Sleep isn’t the only thing that can strengthen your immune system; vitamin D does too and you’ll get plenty of vitamin D from being in the sunshine – just make sure you wear sun cream! Sunlight has also been known to alleviate certain illnesses such as Seasonal Affective Disorder.
Good for the Mind
Going on holiday isn’t just good for our bodies; it’s good for our minds too. Giving our minds the chance to forget everything going on at home and at work will both de-stress you and relax you. You’ll notice that your memory and concentration levels will improve when you return to work and you’ll also find yourself in a much happier mood after a good rest.
Do What You Enjoy
Our fast-paced, busy lives often leave us with little time to do what we really enjoy, and that’s why being on holiday is the perfect opportunity to take advantage of not having to answer to anyone.
Holidays give you the chance to break from your routine and engage in whatever it is that makes you happy. Sit by the pool and get lost in a good book, go shopping around local markets, visit nearby attractions, explore the surrounding area or indulge in some luxury spa treatments – you decide! You can also use your time to get creative. After all, your best ideas come when you’re in a relaxed state of mind.
Try Something New
People can feel most inspired when on holiday. Use this to your advantage by trying something new and engaging in some different activities that you wouldn’t normally do at home. Try some local, healthy cuisines and open your eyes to some new recipes that you could take home with you.
The weather on holiday usually makes for the perfect opportunity to try some great new outdoor activities. You could enjoy a round of golf at a local course, hire bicycles or take a long walk around the local area. Make the most of your hotel pool and even try some organised activities such as yoga or water aerobics. You never know, it could spark a new interest for you when you return home.
There is no better time for a bit of self-reflection than when you are on holiday and away from all other distractions.
It’s important to allow yourself some ‘me’ time in order to challenge yourself and find out new things about yourself. Taking time to relax in your own company will re-set your mind, improving your mood and in turn improving your relationships with friends, family and colleagues.
Finding a quiet spot on the beach and taking in the relaxing sounds of the waves can have the same effects as meditation and will rejuvenate your whole body, ready to kick-start again once you get home.
Apart from enjoying a much needed rest, the best thing about going on holiday is the memories that you are left with. You will create hundreds of happy memories from your time away that you can treasure and share with others when you get back to reality.
Holidays bring you closer to your loved ones, enjoying special moments together and sharing new experiences with one another. Your days will be filled with laughter, and laughter really is the best medicine – releasing endorphins that will in turn strengthen your immune system (as well as sleep and vitamin D!).
It’s important to enjoy every minute and celebrate why you have earned that holiday. And then, once you get home, simply conjuring up happy holiday memories is said to be an instant way to relax your mind whenever you’re put in a stressful situation.
So what are you waiting for? Give yourself a break!
