However, while the town has all the right ingredients for a memorable holiday, it’s got an ace in the hole for anyone looking to play golf in Belek Turkey. Golf in Belek
Until the early ‘90s, the town was a small but popular fishing village. However, under the guidance of the Ministry for Tourism, the area was developed with golfers in mind. The first course was designed by professional golfers David Feherty and David Jones, and was opened to the public in 1994. Their design incorporated elements from both British and American courses, with incremental layers that take the player through eucalyptus and pine trees and with naturally-formed lakes providing further challenges. At just under 7000 yards in length and with small greens for newer players, it continues to be one of the most popular golf courses in Belek Turkey.
Since then, the town has hosted several prestigious golf tournaments, including the European Seniors Tour, the Turkish Airlines World Golf Final, and the Turkish Airlines Open. In addition, it’s not uncommon to find pro-players and celebrities playing golf in Belek Turkey, with the likes of Tiger Woods, Rory Mcllroy and David Cameron having graced the greens.
Belek golf courses
The first course, named the National Golf Club, has become the benchmark for all the other golf courses in Belek Turkey. They offer different levels of challenge, allowing newbies to get into the swing of things and giving seasoned hotshots a run for their money. With the courses only 20 minutes’ drive from one another, you could easily spend a week trying them all out without travelling too far. Here are a few that are well worth investigating:
Titanic Golf Club
Formerly known as the TAT International Golf Club, the newly-named Titanic Golf Club is home to a championship-standard golf course. Designed by Martin Hawtree, the Mediterranean, the River and the Forest offer unpredictable tees and challenges for golfers of all abilities. It’s perfect for groups, and there are 27 holes set over the three courses with a backdrop of some of the best scenery in the region. The clubhouse boasts a terrace bar where you can enjoy a post-putting drink or two and plan your next outing.
Cornelia Golf Club
When it comes to prestige, it doesn’t get much more impressive than the courses found at the Cornelia Golf Club. Overlooking the sea, it boasts a 27-hole championship-standard course, designed by one of the world’s most famous golfers, Sir Nick Faldo. With beautiful greens (some set over deceptive inclines) and peppered with pine trees and lakes, the courses at the Cornelia are as stunning as they are challenging. For those who are new to the game, the golf club offers lessons to help you get off to the best start.
Antalya Golf Club
One of the most popular clubs in the area, the Antalya Golf Club offers two outstanding golf courses. The PGA Sultan course was designed by David Jones, for competitive golfers. With cleverly-positioned bunkers and some testing water hazards, there’s no time for complacency. Think a sunnier, more glamorous version of Wentworth and you’re in the right area. Its sister course, the Pasha, is equally challenging, featuring difficult dog-legs, rolling greens and tricky bunkers. This is a great golf course for players of any handicap.
Designed by Perry Dye, the Lykia Links golf course is for those who like their game to offer something a little bit different. While it still benefits from the picture-perfect scenery, the course is defined by its lengthy, snaking bunkers which are lined with railway sleepers. Whether Dye had the sea-breeze in mind or not is unknown, but they do tend to ensure that even the truest of shots can find its way into the bunkers. An unforgettable golf course designed to test even the professionals.
