As the nights draw in and the weather takes a turn for the worse, so can your mood! If the prospect of a solid few months of shivering in the sleet and snow fills you with dread, booking your winter sun holiday is a great way to give you the boost you need to make it through until Christmas. The only problem is deciding where to go. Take a look at out my top five October winter sun destinations that will help to take the hassle out of choosing your holiday:
If you want a winter holiday with a difference then head to Cuba for a break spent sampling foreign cultures. Why not wander around Havana and soak up the city’s rich heritage, visit Santiago de Cuba where music and dancing are the order of the day, or top up your tan on one of the many beaches in Holguin? For something more relaxing then head to the island resort of Cayo Coco where you can indulge in the activities laid on by one of the many luxurious hotels or simply sit smoking a cigar and sipping rum like a local!
A winter break is all about soaking up the rays and splashing in the waves and resorts such as Hurghada and Marsa Alam in Egypt offer the perfect place for people who love to spend their time on the beach – whether you want to top up your tan laid out on the sands or snorkel in the incredible, crystal clear waters. If that’s not for you, there’s also shopping, bustling bars and restaurants abound for the more cosmopolitan traveller.
Fancy a Spanish break but don’t want to compromise on the weather then Lanzarote is great for a winter getaway. Full of beautiful beaches, this Canary Island is packed with great activities to keep the whole family happy. Whether you want to shop ‘til you drop at the Teguise market or just relax with a round of golf, there’s something for everyone. If the thought of bustling nightlife doesn’t thrill you then there are plenty of peaceful places to rest by the waves, like Playa De Los Pocillos, the ideal spot to switch off and recharge your batteries.
Head to Tenerife for affordable winter sun that’s less than four hours from home. You can spend your break in the tourist haven of Playas Das Americas or have some peace and quiet in charming Los Christianos. Take a trip up Teide, the island’s inactive volcano, indulge in one of the many activities from horse-riding to helicopter rides, or simply stretch out by the pool and enjoy the wonderful weather and great amenities on offer. If you want a holiday where everything is on your doorstep then Tenerife is the place for you.
If you want a break under the sun’s rays but don’t want to travel for hours then Turkey is a nearby destination that offers the best of east and west. There’s a wealth of activities on offer – whether you spend your time marvelling at the eastern architecture like the Blue Mosque, or wander around the Roman ruins that are dotted all around. Soak up the atmosphere in bustling bazaars or just laze on endless white sands staring out to sea – there’s a spot in Turkey for everyone.
