If you’re used teeing off in the wind and the rain at your local course then a golfing breaking in Benidorm will do wonders for your game, and your suntan. There’s nothing quite like standing on the first tee with the sun on your back and clear skies above. Who knows: the combination might even shave a few strokes off your scorecard.
Once you arrive in this sunny part of Spain, which Benidorm golf courses do you need to play? The Costa Brava is a golfing mecca and you really are spoilt for choice, but here’s five recommendations all within easy reach of Benidorm.
The Villaitana complex lies just a couple of miles from the centre of Benidorm and is home to two Jack Nicklaus-designed courses. Both layouts offer 18 holes of championship golfing challenges, with stunning views of both the sea and the mountains. The complex provides you with two contrasting courses for varying levels of experience.
The undulating Poniente Course is a little under 4,000 metres and plays to a par of 62, making it the perfect course for beginners or for experienced players who want to hone their nine-irons and their short game.
The par-72 Levante Course can play more than 6,600 metres and throws up water hazards and tight fairways to really test your game. Other facilities include a driving range, practice green and a clubhouse.
Altea Club de Golf
Golf in Benidorm provides you with plenty of variety. The Altea Club de Golf is situated in the beautiful village of Altea, less than 10 miles from Benidorm. The first things you’ll notice are the Santa Bernia Mountains, which make for a stunning backdrop. And there’s the course itself; a 9-hole hilly layout that places a premium on accuracy and skill. Despite only measuring 3,000 metres from the back tees, it’s a tricky opponent. The club is also home to a driving range and offers golf club hire if you’ve left yours at home.
Stretching out to over 7,000 metres from the back tees, and the host of several professional events, Bonalba isn’t for the faint-hearted. If you’ve arrived in Benidorm with your A-game then this is a course you’ll love playing. Situated around five lakes, water is a constant feature at Bonalba, as are the palm and pine trees that the dot the fairways. In short, it’s a great test of golf that’ll really add to your holiday in Benidorm.
Alicante Golf Course
As the name suggests this par-72 is far closer to Alicante than Benidorm, but it’s well worth the 40-minute drive. Designed by golfing legend Seve Ballesteros, this layout is located on the gorgeous San Juan beach. Its five large lakes bring water hazards into play on 12 of the 18 holes. Due to the long walks between holes, a buggy is recommended.
Las Rejas Golf Course
If you’ve come on holiday in Benidorm with your family rather than your golfing buddies but still want to tee up with the kids, than Las Rejas is the ideal course. It’s situated just a stone’s throw from Poniente beach and is a straightforward pay-as-you-play 9-hole course set among large pines. It’s a perfect introduction to the game for beginners, and a great way to spend a few hours with the family while still offering you the chance to sharpen your skills.
