Holidays are all about sun, sea and sand. Although, I don’t know about you, but one of the biggies for me is…food. I love being on holiday and feeling like I can get away with eating whatever I want, whenever I want. There’s nothing better than seeking out some of the best local restaurants and indulging in traditional dishes and sipping on a lovely glass of red.
If you’re planning a Fuerteventura holiday, then you’ll be pleased to know that the island is small enough to be able to get out and about to explore all the great restaurants that it has to offer. So, to help you plan your mealtimes, here’s a selection of the best restaurants in Fuerteventura.
1) Ascension, Caleta de Fuste
Located in the heart of Caleta de Fuste, Ascension is a relatively new but popular restaurant that prides itself on serving delicious and innovative dishes, prepared with the freshest ingredients. It can be a little tricky to find, located above a China shop, but I promise you, it’ll be worth it.
2) La Jaira de Demian, Puerto del Rosano
This is definitely one of the best restaurants in Fuerteventura, so you should definitely take the time to visit the island’s capital town so you can eat here. It’s a gastro-pub, which serves mouth-watering tapas and other Mediterranean food, creating amazing flavours from the most natural ingredients.
3) La Falua, La Lajita
Head to the quaint fishing village of La Lajita and sample some of the best Mediterranean food on the island. The owners are Polish, but they sure know how to do Spanish cuisine. You can expect great food, excellent service, immaculate presentation and an unforgettable experience.
1) Calu Restaurant & Lounge Bar, Corralejo
Voted on TripAdvisor as one of the top three restaurants in the bustling resort of Corralejo, you know you’re going to be in for a treat here. Calù Restaurant & Lounge Bar serves delicious Italian and Mediterranean food, with exciting cocktails to help wash it down; all in an idyllic seafront location.
2) Pizzart Caleta de Fuste, Antigua
If you’re looking for a good old hearty, Italian meal, then this is the place to go. As the name suggests, it specialises in pizzas, and really good ones at that. It’s reasonably priced and you can eat-in, take-away or even have it delivered. Plus, all pizzas are made fresh to order.
1) Casa Toño, Puerto Del Rosario
If you’re on holiday on an island such as Fuerteventura, then you need to indulge in some mouth-watering seafood at least a couple of times while you’re there. Casa Toño’s cutting-edge menu has something for everyone, but trying the red tuna is a must. You might want to book ahead too.
2) Frasquita, Caleta De Fuste
Don’t be fooled by the slightly underwhelming appearance and the plastic tables and chairs. Because contrary to what you might think, this is one of the best places to go in order to taste the freshest catch from Fuerteventura’s seas. There’s no menu here; just whatever the fishermen bring in.
Cafés and bars
1) H20 Juice Bar & Vegan Café, Corralejo
If, like me, you’re often guilty of over-indulging on holiday (come on, who isn’t?), then this is the place for you. H20 Juice Bar & Vegan Café is a little healthy haven, but don’t let that put you off; both the food and drinks are superb. Its location on a peaceful square adds to the whole experience.
2) El Goloso de Cotillo, El Cotillo
Now, let’s forget everything I just said about being healthy and talk about cake instead. El Goloso is a quaint French patisserie, selling all the wonderful cakes, treats and pastries that you could ever imagine. Enjoy an excellent coffee or opt for a fresh juice to counteract the guilt.
3) Agua Tiki Bar, Corralejo
Boasting a prime beachfront location, this is the perfect spot to grab a seat and watch the world and the waves go by. It serves refreshing drinks, as well as breakfast and lunch. It’s always busy though, so don’t leave it until the last minute to try and visit, or you’ll be disappointed if you can’t get in.
Something a bit different
1) The Ugly Duckling, Corralejo
As I write, this is currently the number one restaurant in the whole of Fuerteventura, according to TripAdvisor, so make this place a priority. It’s only a small restaurant, but it certainly doesn’t go unnoticed. Serving succulent Scandinavian and Danish dishes, it really stands out from the crowd.
2) Infusion Restaurante, Corralejo
You won’t find a menu more exciting and varied than the one at Infusion Restaurante. Bringing a taste of Louisiana to the Canary Islands, it cooks up lip-smacking Cajun and Creole dishes such as jambalaya and succulent spare ribs where the meat just falls off the bone. Be sure to try the frozen cheesecake, which is a house speciality.
3) Sanus Fuerteventura, Corralejo
Another one in Corralejo; this stylish restaurant serves tasty Italian, Mediterranean and European food, but with a difference. Sanus focuses all its attention on catering for people with special dietary requirements, whether you’re gluten free, vegan, vegetarian, diabetic or any other. You’ll love it whether you have a dietary requirement or not.
