If you’re looking for a beach-filled island getaway, Skiathos is just what you need. Situated off the east coast of mainland Greece, Skiathos is one of the most popular destinations in the Sporades Islands, largely due to its extensive list of beautiful sandy beaches, hot bars and clubs, and ancient archaeological ruins.
Top Resorts and Hotels
The island capital Skiathos Town got its big break in the Hollywood blockbuster Mamma Mia! and has been attracting celebrities and fans ever since. Home to charming Greek villas and a large harbour, Skiathos Town has a chic, sophisticated vibe and a crowd dressed to impress. You’ll find everything you need in this cosmopolitan city centre – enjoy local ouzo along the waterfront, dine out on some world-class Greek cuisine and then hit the bars and clubs afterwards to dance until dawn.
For a more traditional experience, visit Troulos and Kolios, two neighbouring villages on the south coast. It’s decidedly quieter here than in party-crazy Skiathos Town – instead of a packed promenade and overflowing cocktail bars, you’ll find rolling green hills and lush olive groves.
Attractions and Things to Do
Skiathos boasts over 60 beautiful beaches, everything from secluded coves to long, sandy stretches. Koukounaries is the main beach on the island, backed by a Stone Pine forest that separates the lagoon from the Aegean Sea. For something a little more ‘revealing’, the nearby Banana Beach is a naturist beach and one for adults only! Meanwhile Lalaria is a hidden little gem that can only be reached by boat and is well worth the trip. Instead of sand, you’ll find smooth white pebbles and sharp cliffs that drop straight into the clear blue sea.
While Skiathos beaches are legendary, there are plenty of other sights to see – there are several important landmarks such as the Monastery of Evangelistria, the Church of Ilias and the abandoned medieval town of Kastro.
Day trips out to other nearby islands, particularly Skopelos, are also extremely popular.
Annual Temperature and Rainfall
Skiathos is famous for its wonderfully hot and dry summers, making it the perfect choice for a beachside holiday. July is the peak season, with an average temperature of 26C, although it is common to experience weather much hotter than that. August is the best month for swimming, with ocean temperature a pleasant 26C. December and January are the wettest and coldest months.
