I love shopping. I mean, I really, really love shopping. ‘Nipping out’ at lunchtime to a nearby retail park, ‘popping’ to the local shopping centre on a Thursday night or an all-out shopping spree in a nearby city at the weekend.
The thought of visiting a new destination, be it a European city or a more exotic location, and spending time wandering around the sights with a bit of shopping thrown in is my idea of heaven!
There are many places around the world which are becoming well known for their fantastic shopping experiences and here’s the low down of my top three.
Desert delights in Dubai
This sprawling desert city is probably better known for its luxury hotels and long sandy beaches, but Dubai really is becoming a place to shop!
It’s home to many large shopping centres including the world’s biggest the ‘Dubai Mall’. With over 1,200 shops, you can buy anything your heart desires from designer clothes, shoes and handbags to gold jewellery and toys. It even has its own aquarium, ice rink and indoor theme park.
New York, New York what a wonderful town
Often called the fashion capital of the world, New York is famous for its luxury boutiques and major fashion houses. You’ll find lots of them on Fifth Avenue, the heart of New York’s shopping district. Brands such as Chanel and Versace rub shoulders with well-known high street names like Gap and Abercrombie & Fitch.
Chinatown is a feast for the senses and great for some window shopping or buying those all-important souvenirs. You’ll also be able to grab an amazing bite to eat in one of the street-side vendors. Soho is an uber-trendy area. Beautiful architecture mixes with cobbled streets and it has a distinctive artist’s vibe. This is a great place to buy original art if you’re able to fit it into your suitcase!
Balinese handcrafted delights
If you like to grab a bargain whilst enjoying an exotic retreat, then Bali is a great choice. You can pick up some beautiful locally crafted pieces; wood carving is a particular speciality. Take some home as a reminder of your holiday to this stunning island.
For authentic Balinese art you should head to one of the markets where you can buy pieces created by local artisans. Ubud art market is the most visited in Bali. Here you could pick up a beautiful painting, maybe a stylish batik shirt or some hand crafted silver jewellery.
