Introducing the Safer Tourism Foundation

We all want to stay safe on holiday, right? So, I think you’ll want to hear about this. I want to tell you all about a brand new independent charity that we’re supporting; the Safer Tourism Foundation.

Who’ll benefit from the Safer Tourism Foundation?

If you’re planning on going on holiday, you’ll benefit from the Safer Tourism Foundation; whether you’re a solo traveller, travelling as a couple or going away with all the family.

Why do we need the Safer Tourism Foundation?

There’s no denying that planning and booking your holiday is an exciting time. With so much choice of where to go, the type of accommodation you stay in and the activities you do; you can create the perfect holiday to suit you.

When we go on holiday, we all assume that we’ll come home in at least as good a shape, mentally and physically, as we left (I mean, who’s counting those extra scoops of ice cream at the All Inclusive buffet?). And for the vast majority of travellers, that’s usually the case.

But for thousands of holidaymakers each year, that’s sadly not always how things go. Every year, travellers suffer injuries from accidents that could easily have been prevented. Some of these can end tragically, turning a holiday into a nightmare.

Of course, no one wants to experience this. So reputable travel companies such as ourselves work hard to make a safe environment for your holiday, whether that’s on the flight out, in resort or during activities and excursions. But nothing is risk-free, and things can still go wrong. If that happens, you can expect your tour operator to be responsive and address the things within their control. The Safer Tourism Foundation aims to advise you on all such matters.

What can you do to stay safe on holiday?

Sometimes things happen that are just bad luck; something no one could’ve foreseen or done anything to prevent. And sometimes we as holidaymakers have a part to play. An unfamiliar environment, whether it’s on the beach, on the roads or in and around your hotel, presents the potential for accidents to happen.

Added to that, when we go on holiday, I think we’re all guilty of sometimes behaving a little differently than when we’re at home. We might take a more carefree approach to life (that’s part of what a holiday is about, after all), but this can sometimes put ourselves at risk. If we hop on a moped wearing only shorts and flip flops, we might ask ourselves, would we do this at home?

There are a number of steps we can take to make ourselves more aware of the different risks we face on holiday, so why not take a look at some of the Safer Tourism Foundation’s top tips for staying safe abroad?

So what is the Safer Tourism Foundation?

The Safer Tourism Foundation has been set up to help us all stay safe and well when we travel. It’s a one-stop-shop for practical, down-to-earth advice for you to use at all stages of your holiday; from planning where to go, to what to do if you need medical help while abroad.

There’s a huge amount of useful information available from different travel companies, government websites and specialist advice sites; all aiming to help you and your loved ones stay safe and well on holiday, making sure you have the best possible time.

It’s an independent charity, so it doesn’t represent any travel company or holiday provider, but plenty of us are supporting it. Its main goal is to reduce the number of people who are hurt, or worse, when on holiday. From the Safer Tourism Foundation website, you can get a clear explanation on things such as:

  • How to use the government’s advice on travelling to different countries (for example, what is the terrorist threat?)
  • What to pack in a first aid kit
  • Things to be aware of if you’re camping or on a party weekend (like a stag or hen do)

So why not take a look at the website for yourself? I’m hoping you’ll find lots of useful and practical advice to take on board before your next holiday. Let me know what you find in the comments below. But, above all; stay safe, well and enjoy your holiday.
