Planning your dream holiday can often be just as exciting as actually going on it, so we want to make sure you can find the perfect getaway for you and your loved one. I know that sometimes it can be a bit harder to choose the right place to go, so I thought I’d tell you about some of the best LGBTQ-friendly holiday destinations that you can go to.
Whether you want to relax by the pool all day, embrace local cultures on a sightseeing tour or experience a party atmosphere like no other, I’ve found all the destinations where you’re sure to have the time of your life. Picture you and your partner soaking up the sun on a stunning beach in Mexico; exploring Malta’s fascinating history; or indulging in the best shopping spree of your life in New York. Wherever you choose, I’m sure you’ll experience an unforgettable holiday like no other.
The beautiful island of Mykonos is all about glitz and glamour and is fast-becoming one of the most stylish choices when it comes to picking the perfect gay holiday destination. It’s home to the huge XLSIOR gay festival and the island’s capital, Mykonos Town, is where you’ll find the majority of gay bars, especially around Little Venice. It’s famous for its traditional whitewashed buildings and quaint cobbled streets and the friendly locals only add to the distinct liberal vibe of the island.
Mexico, as a whole, is very open and accepting of the LGBTQ community, so there are plenty of different resorts you can choose from. I’ve chosen the Cancun area in this case purely for its huge range of things to do; from relaxing on the stunning beaches, to delving into the local culture and exploring ancient Mayan ruins. Then, of course, it has one of the liveliest party scenes that you’re ever likely to experience, with places such as Coco Bongo. So that’s all boxes ticked, if you ask me!
This may come as a bit of a surprise to some of you, but Gran Canaria is actually a really up and coming gay holiday destination. Playa del Ingles is the resort to be heading to for all the best fun and entertainment. There’s a lively drag scene here and also the amazing Yumbo Centre; full of LGBTQ-friendly bars, restaurants, shops and attractions. There are two Gay Pride Festivals each year in Gran Canaria, in May and November.
Malta is leading the way when it comes to cultural acceptance of the LGBTQ community. It’s one of the most gay-friendly holiday destinations you can go to, so much so that it was actually awarded first place on the ILGA-Europe Rainbow Europe Index in 2016. It’s a fascinating island to explore, with a wealth of history in the capital Valletta, picturesque beaches, a great nightlife in St. Julian’s Bay and excellent diving opportunities too.
Spain’s Costa Dorada has plenty of exciting places to stay and visit on your next holiday; from the colourful resort of Salou to the more peaceful town of La Pineda. But by far the most popular place for LGBTQ crowds is the party town of Sitges, which prides itself on being one of the most gay-friendly hotspots in the whole of Spain. There are a number of different festivals, parades and events taking place here throughout the year, so it’s well worth checking out what’s on before you book.
If you’re looking for something a bit different from your traditional beach holiday, then New York could be just the place for you. There’s a thriving gay scene here, with incredible bars and a buzzing nightlife. The shopping is second to none, so a huge spree absolutely has to be on the cards. And if you’re thinking of popping the question, where could possibly be more romantic than the picturesque setting of Central Park?
