With every New Year comes a new set of resolutions. We all secretly make them, even if we don’t shout about them. Maybe you want to shed a few Christmas pounds? Or perhaps spend more time with your family and less time on your phone? Or maybe it’s the common one that everyone always promises they’ll do; see more of the world. If that sounds familiar, then why not consider somewhere brand new for your holiday this year? To help give you some inspiration, I’ve come up with six holiday destinations that you’ve probably never thought of visiting.
When most people think of Bulgaria, they tend to conjure up either images of ski resorts or groups of youngsters partying the night away in Sunny Beach. But there’s far more to see in this beautiful Balkan country. Sunny Beach itself, as the name would suggest, has a stunning Blue Flag beach with miles of soft, golden sand stretching as far as the eye can see. Then there are traditional resorts such as Nessebar and Sozopol, with their quaint cobbled streets, ancient architecture and picturesque wooden homes.
Many people dream of visiting the Caribbean, with its pristine white beaches and gently swaying palm trees. But the stunning island of Tobago is often overshadowed by its bigger, more popular neighbours. Tobago may be small, but it certainly has a lot to give. Soak up the sun on the breathtaking Pigeon Point beach, dive into the crystal clear waters at Nylon Pool or delve into the local culture with colourful carnivals and traditional goat racing.
The island of Madeira is a region of Portugal, but it’s located off the northwest coast of Africa, just north of the Canary Islands. This means that you can expect excellent weather pretty much all year round. If you’re a fan of all things outdoor, then Madeira really is a great choice for you as you can enjoy fantastic hiking, cycling and exploring, thanks to the island’s mountainous landscape and mind-blowing scenery. Hop on a cable car, take a ride in a wicker toboggan and indulge in succulent local cuisine.
Experience the vibrant culture and bustling energy of Morocco on an unforgettable holiday to North Africa. There are two different types of holiday you can have in Morocco. If you love relaxing on the beach with the family, then head to one of the coastal resorts such as Agadir. But if you prefer to experience new cultures and live life like the locals, then Marrakech ticks all the boxes. Get lost among the bazaars, souks and side streets as you emerge yourself in all the sights, sounds and smells of this captivating city.
A personal favourite of mine, I don’t think there’s anyone who wouldn’t fall in love with Croatia’s endless charm and beauty. You could pick the resort that appeals to you the most and stay in one spot, or why not take advantage of a twin centre holiday? You can opt to spend a few days exploring the sights of cities such as Split and Dubrovnik (an absolute must for Game of Thrones fans) and then head away from the mainland and enjoy some island hopping as you experience beautiful Brac and luxurious Hvar.
6) Ras Al Khaimah
You’ll be forgiven if you’ve never heard of Ras Al Khaimah before; it was new to me not too long ago too. One of the seven United Arab Emirates, Ras Al Khaimah, or RAK for short, is a close neighbour of both Dubai and Abu Dhabi. It’s got something for everyone, with palm-fringed beaches and plenty of adventures to be had in the surrounding desert and rugged mountains. Enjoy the perfect combination of relaxing and thrilling experiences and then round your day off in the comfort of one of RAK’s many luxurious hotels.
