How would you like a little introduction to the third of our new destinations available for you to book for Summer 2017? Now, I know I should never show bias, but I can’t help but admit that this one is a personal favourite of mine… Croatia. Stunningly beautiful Croatia.
The spectacular Dalmatian Coast will leave you spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing a base for your Croatia holiday. But luckily for you, we have a number of the best and most idyllic resorts to suit your taste, making the decision just that little bit easier. And what’s more? HBO’s hugely popular Game of Thrones series is returning to our screens this week and many of the scenes from it were filmed around Croatia, so read on to find out where you can see them…
Why Croatia is so great
Game of Thrones
If, like me, you’re a huge fan of Game of Thrones, then you might already be aware that a fair amount of it was actually filmed in Croatia, making it the ideal holiday destination for any fanatic.
A trip to Croatia wouldn’t be complete without visiting the ancient walled city of Dubrovnik aka King’s Landing. You’ll find loads of different tours on offer that will take you to all the key filming locations, but you can also get a little map and see a lot of them for yourself too. A few places of note would be the city walls themselves; Fort Lovrijenac aka Red Keep; the Baroque Staircase where Cersei was famously shamed; Pile aka Blackwater Bay and the Mineeta Tower, which represents the House of the Undying in the show.
Also, many of Daenarys’ scenes were filmed in the city of Split and the surrounding areas such as Baska Voda, so it’s possible to take film location tours around here too.
With over 1000 islands off its mainland, you should definitely take the opportunity to indulge in a bit of island hopping whilst in Croatia. Each has its own unique charm and appeal, so it’s worth doing a little bit of research beforehand to see where you like the look of most.
My suggestion would be to definitely make time for both the islands of Brac and Hvar. Brac boasts spectacular green landscapes, clear blue seas and quaint towns and villages to explore. It’s also home to Croatia’s most famous beach; the teardrop-shaped Zlatni Rat. Hvar has a very upmarket and stylish vibe. It has a beautiful marina and excellent coastal walks to enjoy. Be sure to head up to the fortress and take in the incredible panoramic views from the top.
Breathtaking natural beauty
You won’t find many places with more natural beauty than Croatia. Around every corner is another stunning sight or landscape to take your breath away. A car or bus journey along the Dalmatian Coast is an adventure in itself, with views like no other in every direction. Then there are the many islands, with their picturesque beaches and turquoise waters.
But Croatia’s beauty isn’t just limited to the coast. Head further inland and you’ll discover places that look like they’re from a real fantasy land, not just Game of Thrones! A visit to the magical Plitvice Lakes is well worth the journey.
R&R with your nearest and dearest
The great thing about Croatia is that it’s managed to maintain its traditional charm without being overrun by tourism. You can easily walk down the street and take your time choosing which tempting seafront restaurant to eat at without being badgered by each one, wanting you to choose theirs. You’re always given just the right amount of attention, making for perfectly relaxing experiences at all times.
Then away from the streets, the care and service given to you at your hotel will always be second to none, especially at the serene SENTIDO Kaktus close to Supetar’s beach and harbour on Brac Island, where it’s all about relaxation and recuperation. Bliss.
