Recently, I was lucky enough to be given the opportunity to visit Rhodes. Having previously visited Kos and explored Crete, I was looking forward to a new adventure. Each of the Greek islands are known and loved for their individual charm, and with Rhodes hailed by many as their favourite, I had high hopes for my trip. Well, I certainly wasn’t disappointed, and if you’ve thought about visiting Rhodes, take a look at my three unmissable experiences on this pretty Grecian gem.
1) A Night in the Old Town
Protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Centre, you might think Rhodes’ Old Town would lack in lively character after sundown. This couldn’t be further from the truth; you’ll find the cobbled streets a hive of activity with couples, groups of friends and families. Due to the ancient surroundings, it feels nothing like a soulless strip of bars and clubs; instead you’ll discover twinkling fairly lights at every turn, winding side streets full of music and relaxed cocktail hangouts.
For a night out to remember, head to the Fuego Music Bar, just past the Old Town Square. This is the place to be if you love dancing into the early hours, with lots of outside seating, fantastic drinks and a live outdoor DJ spinning all the old-school classics. Good times are guaranteed, and with the street as your dance floor, you can let loose to your heart’s content.
2) A Trip to Tsambika Beach
If you’d like to chill out after a night at the Old Town, there’s nothing better than spending an afternoon relaxing on a beach. Although many of the Greek beaches are shingle and stone, Tsambika Beach is beautifully soft and sandy, with sparkling turquoise waves and a rugged, mountainous backdrop. The mountain itself is surrounded by history, as a myth from times gone by said that a visit to the monastery at the top promoted fertility.
If you choose to stay at Casa Cook Rhodes on your visit to the island, there’s a daily hike to the top of the mountain, where you can reflect and enjoy the views of Tsambika Beach below. The beach itself is perfect for little ones too, with shallow waves where they can paddle and a café nearby; so you can all treat yourselves to an ice cream in the sun.
3) A Visit to the Valley of the Butterflies
Although Rhodes is the perfect place for a relaxing holiday, there’s plenty to explore on day trips too, if you’d like a break from lazing on the beach. Stop by the Valley of the Butterflies to experience the natural forest of Oriental Sweetgum trees, which is home to hundreds of butterflies. Kids will love getting to know the unique winged creatures and learning all about their natural habitat.
It’s also a romantic place for couples to escape to, with walking tracks through shaded, leafy valleys, surrounded by tumbling waterfalls. While you’re in the area, why not sail over to Halki? This tiny island is completely untouched by tourism and will allow you to experience the real feeling of Greece. Immerse yourself in some traditional culture, explore the pastel-coloured streets and swim with exotic fish in crystal-clear waters.
