I love Greece. I love the people; I love the food, I love the culture, I adore everything about it so when I was given the chance to explore somewhere new in Greece, I jumped at the chance. I have to say; the Olympus Riviera didn’t disappoint, with golden sand beaches, magnificent natural beauty and charming villages, what’s not to like? If you’re sitting on the fence as to whether the is right for you, here’s my ultimate guide to holidays in the Olympus Riviera including my top choices on where to stay.
What to do
Explore the area’s ancient history
I don’t know about you but, when I go on holiday, I love to learn a little bit about the area I’m visiting’s history, so the Olympus Riviera instantly drew me in with its historic past. It’s home to the legendary Mount Olympus, which according to Greek mythology, was the home of the Greek gods. It’s also home to Greece’s second largest city, Thessaloniki, which has a sprinkling of 16th-century architecture. I find the best way to soak up the past of a city is to take a wander around and I could get a feel for the history of this place as I made my way through the old quarter’s winding cobbled lanes to The HolyWhite Tower, the stone monument on the waterfront.
Hike through miles of natural beauty
You can’t beat a hike in the great outdoors, especially in the Olympus Rivera, with the Greek sun shining down on you as you stop to take a moment in front of the breath-taking natural panoramas. There are many different trails to follow that’ll take you strolling through lush green forestry to climbing the dizzying heights of the mighty Mount Olympus. One of my favourite trails was down at the foot of the mountain where I followed a tree-lined path down to the Enipea Waterfalls, the sight of the water crashing against the rocks is truly spectacular.
Beach hop through the villages
For me, holidays are all about finding that balance between exploring the local area and just simply relaxing, which is why I would suggest coast hopping your way through the local villages. The beaches on the Olympus Rivera are long and wide, so there’s plenty of room for you to pull up a sun lounger and get settled with a good book. While each village offers something different, from magnificent monuments to tiny tavernas tucked away on little side streets.
Where to stay
SENTIDO Mediterranean Village
If you’re after a bit of rest and relaxation, I can promise you, you’ll find it at the SENTIDO Mediterranean Village. Picture this; you’ve enjoyed a SENTIDO Discovery Walk around the local area and then when you return; there’s a sun lounger waiting for you by the impressive lagoon-style pool, ready for an afternoon of simply soaking up the Greek sunshine. Sounds like pure bliss, right?
In my opinion, nothing beats a hotel with spa facilities so how does soaking in the whirlpool or letting stresses go in the sauna at the smartline Mediterranean sound? This is a proper ‘put your feet up’ hotel but if you fancy getting out and about, you’re just a short distance to Paralia’s restaurants and bars. I don’t know about you, but I just can’t stay away from Greek tavernas.
Looking to get away from the kids? Cavo Olympo is a great choice for an adult-only escape. From flourishing greenery to the blues of the Aegean, the views here are fantastic. A little tip I found at this hotel is that if you dine at the Mediterranean restaurant, there’s a shaded terrace area where you can enjoy your meal while the sounds of the sea lap gently in the background. And the hotel’s super stylish, always a bonus!
