One of the most up and coming resorts on Egypt’s Red Sea Riviera; Marsa Alam is an idyllic holiday hotspot, boasting stunning beaches, luxurious hotels and some of the best diving opportunities in the world. Located three hours south of Hurghada, you might not be too familiar with this beautiful resort, so I thought I’d tell you a little bit more about it. Here are five of the top things to do in Marsa Alam.
1) Experience the first-class diving and snorkelling
Marsa Alam is most famous for its incredible reefs and dive sites that you can explore, just a stone’s throw away from its shores. One of the sites that’s at the top of everyone’s must-dive list is the Elphinstone Reef. You can expect to see some amazing sealife here, from oceanic whitetip sharks and hammerheads, to manta rays, dolphins and all kinds of tropical fish. The Brother Islands, Dolphin House and Abu Dabbab are some other popular dive spots where you’ll love exploring; whether you’re a seasoned pro or a first-timer.
2) While away your time on the superb beaches
If you’re not much of a diver, don’t worry, there are still lots of other great things to do in Marsa Alam. You’ll still have plenty of fun soaking up the warm sun on the resort’s stunning, golden beaches. With powder soft sand and swaying palm trees, you’ll feel like you’ve been transported to paradise, and to be honest, you’re not far off. The area boasts so many picture-perfect beaches, but the most popular has to be Sharm El Luli, a few miles south of the town. Be sure to head here and bathe in the crystal-clear waters of the lagoon.
3) Dive right into the action at the waterparks
If you’re going on holiday somewhere as hot and sunny as the Red Sea Riviera, then you’re bound to enjoy cooling off at an action-packed waterpark. One of the most popular parks in Marsa Alam is the Aqua Coraya Waterpark, which features over 13 slides and attractions which both big kids and little kids alike will love making a splash on. Entry to the park is free, if you’re staying at the on-site hotel. You’ll find that many hotels in the area have their own waterparks, most of which you can visit, even if you’re not staying there, although you may have to pay an entry fee.
4) Relax and unwind in a luxurious hotel
If there’s one thing the Red Sea knows how to do really well, it’s luxury. Well, that and fantastic beaches, unbeatable weather and fascinating history etc. But seriously, you’ll be spoilt for choice with all the immaculate hotels you can choose to stay in along its beautiful coast. Marsa Alam hotels are no exception to the rules, and you could easily find yourself looking for excuses not to leave. Many hotels have their own private beaches and even their own section of coral reef to explore. Take a break from the sun and indulge in a relaxing treatment at the on-site spa to be sure that you make the most of your well-deserved holiday.
5) Immerse yourself in the local culture
When you’re in a new and exciting country, there’s nothing better than experiencing a bit of the local culture or delving into the history of the destination. Egypt is such a captivating place, so take the time to try some of the local cuisine or haggle for the best bargain at one of the bazaars. If, like me, you’re fascinated by ancient Egypt, you could even go on an overnight trip to Luxor from Marsa Alam and visit the incredible Karnak Temple and the Valley of the Kings; resting place of King Tutankhamun. And while you’re there, why not take a boat ride down the mighty River Nile?
